What is 1 to 1 MACRO?

    Perhaps I have it wrong

I use my Deardorff S11 studio for 1 to 1 Macro with 11X14 film

This is what I think it is...

1 to 1 macro is when the subject is the same size on the focus screen as it is in real life

Generalize that a little. Subject size = image size on sensitive surface. I mention this because there are SLRs whose viewing area is smaller than the sensitive surface.

The OP is making the same mistake as the person who started this https://www.largeformatphotography.i...ellow-possible discussion. Neither of these posters is fluent in the common language.

Dan's exact, of course. 1:1 (1X) mean the subject is the exact same size as the film/sensor. In the case if 35mm, it's a 1x1.5" subject -- a postage stamp. In the case of 4x5" film, it's 4x5" -- the size of a CD.

2:1 (2X) means the subject is smaller -- HALF the size of the film/sensor -- and magnified (x 2).

1:2 (.5X) means the subject is larger -- TWICE the size of the film/sensor.
