Saunders 16x20 easel overhauling question.

Iam overhauling a Saunders easel that I just bought in very poor
condition. My question is are the bright plastik parts original or have
someone installed them? Will the mechanic will funktion without.

That plastic strip is Teflon tape put on at the factory to reduce friction. Unless torn or damaged, leave it alone.

I tore it now down because everything was sticky with glue and old grease.
Now it runs smooth. I have some Teflontape in the shelf. Now that it's clean
it's quick to redo it.
