    Do's & Don'ts of Photography

    Do's & Don'ts of Photography - an alphabet

    http://www.viceland.com/issues/v11n7/htdocs/dos_donts_photography.php

L - for example (warm a few cockles no doubt)

"L Do: Large format With every douche on the planet swinging T4s over their heads, snapping away like Ron Galella every time someone breathes, it's refreshing to know that some people still lug gigantic, ridiculously expensive large-format cameras to remote locations just for the sake of grain density.
Don'ts: Long exposures, Light Leaks, Live band photos, Low resolution, Liquid Light
Dos: Leicas, Larry Clark, Lee Friedlander, Lenticulars"

    his website is www.tinyvices.com

it gets a little heavy handed with basically being a site devoted to T4 party- my friends are so cool photography, but i think its also really refreshing (at least to me) from the the oldschool ansel adams/ed weston 'its about the craft' camps (here) and new york psuedo art babble of contemporary art (my school) (although i do appreciate both)

If you have ever seen a copy of Vice magazine, an LA publication, you will find the style of photography attempts to look like outsider art. They are big on publishing Terry Richardson images. Seriously, there is an audience of wannabe young rock stars that reads this magazine, but it is a publication for posers. Most of the people reading it think it is some independant street publication, when it fact it is carefully marketed to sell clothing to a specific target audience.

I have to hand it to them for hyping up their publication. They found that LA niche (and also San Diego sometimes), and figured out how to exploit it. This is the aspiring (but too lazy) muscian attending art school, bashing corporations, but wanting more money for clothes, alcohol, concerts, and good food.

Anyway, funny listings of Do's and Don'ts . . . definitely some quite jaded people posting to that . . . . . or at least they are posing like they want to be jaded.

vice is actually from montreal originally, now its based in NY...

yeah they like terry richardson...so what?

the best thing Vice does is make fun of people who knee jerk react to it with misinformation...

its a bit nihilistic, but a great rag if your young and jaded.

i think that do is a pretty funny variation of the idea that harry callahan had with his pictures of his wife and kid being so far away.

I can honestly state he is the Howard Stern of photography. Definitely there is a market for what he does, though I doubt he would be nearly as successful if he was not trying to be outlandish or controversial. Quite a bit of his imagery toys on the edge of being pornography, or some people might actually label it exactly that. His personality gets him the work, not his photographic ability, something that even he claims to not have . . . I read an article/interview in BlackBook in which he seemingly joked about his lack of photographic skills. Oh well, I guess there will always be room for at least one person like that in photography.
