Hot air balloons also revolutionized geology.
Don't dismiss the threat of that, John. One never knows just exactly who those birds are working for.
Dead Horse Point overlook a guy had a bunch of helium filled balloons tied to a chair. He had a tank of Helium and would fill the balloons as he sat in the chair. Chair was tied with a climbing rope to the bumper of his jeep. As they filled he started rising and finally got airborne. He floated more than 100 feet out over the scene and sat there photographing for a bit. Then would cut the string on a balloon, one by one until he started to descend. Then pulled himself back over solid ground and landed.
An interesting way to get a different perspective.
Similar to when an airline pilot radioed the tower at LAX (Los Angeles International Airport) to report a guy in a lawn chair in the glide path of landing airplanes. Tower thought he was crazy and then more planes reported it. Seems the guy had attached a bunch of helium balloons to his chair and took a ride. Police helicopter got involved and ordered him down. He got down, had a BB rifle and would shoot a balloon at a time until he started descending. Was arrested when he made landfall. Don't know if he took any photos or even told his buddies when he started... "Hold my beer".
