Dave...
If you are going to China on a tour package with other 30 torists on a bus, forget your 4x5 and tripod. No way! But if you are on your own with a guide/driver, you will have a great time with your LF gear. Since this is your first time, my advice is just bring a 35mm or a MF and see China. You will be back there with your 4x5 for sure. People are very friendly there. It's safe too.

Dave, I photographed a few places in China with a 35mm (before I began LF), but always on a tripod. Maybe I was just lucky, but I was never given a second glance by the locals, and I set up all over the Great Wall, Summer Palace, Forbidden city, etc.
I would definately bring LF gear.
Thanks for the advice everyone. If anyone has any additional thoughts or advice, please keep it coming.
I can clearly see that chinese LF photographers will have the opportunity to make some wonderfull high quality photos..
Check this link, n you will about the beauty that they have..

Frank, I think her name is Lois Conner and I heard she rode around China on a bicycle with the 7x17 strapped to her back. I'd hardly consider that a wealthy way to operate.
