    Essential Technical Books

What are your must-have go-to technical books over the years. Ones that you would suggest to someone just getting into LF?

    My short list would be:

    Zone VI Manual, Fred Picker

Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs, by St. Ansel.

The Negative, The Print of St. Ansel's new series.

The Book of Pyro, Gordon Hutchins

Real World Photoshop by Bruce Frazier

Using the View Camera Steve Simmons
    Thanks,
    Kirk

And miles to go before I sleep,

    Good list, Kirk. I'd add:

Light - Science & Magic by Hunter and Fuqua

View Camera Technique by Leslie Stroebel

    The Print by Ansel Adams

The Photographer's Master Printing Course by Tim Rudman

Well, I have about half your list and agree. I need to get a couple of the others like an old copy of the Zone VI Manual and Gordon Hutchings book.

You might think about "The Ansel Adams Guide: Basic Techniques" books 1 and 2 by John P. Schaefer. These are good as they take the origional three books of Ansel's and updates them a bit and I think are easier reading.

Good start. I don't have the Book of Pyro but I thought it wasn't a general book. That is, I thought it was only about pyro developers. If you aren't using pyro, do you need this on your bookshelf? Same with the Photoshop books.

OTOH, Light Science and Magic strongly applies making photographs, film and digital alike, so a strong second to that one.

One I'd add is Perception & Imaging by Richard Zakia which has general application to photography, particularly with composition.

Finally, isn't Picker's book called Zone VI Workshop? Or is there another Picker book that I've missed somehow?

I would add Jack Dykinga's Large Format Nature Photography, as a good field primer for those shooting LF color.

    Essential Technical Books

Basic Photographic Materials and Processes by Leslie D. Stroebel (Editor), Richard D. Zakia, Ira Current, John Compton

"This is a formidable, serious book that will satisfy the scientist or engineer who is interested in becoming the best possible photographer in the minimum amount of time. It will come as a revelation to those who've struggled with camera owner's manuals and photo technique written for the lazy and/or stupid. If you can get through this book, you will know more about how photography works than the vast majority of working photographers."

    I'd also suggest the following:

    1. Using the Large Format View Camera by Larry Stone.

    2. Camera Movements by Verlag Grosbild

    3. Creative LF: Natural Landscapes by Urs Tillmanns

    4. Large Format Photography from Kodak

And, concur with Eric in regards to Jack Dykinga's book.

    Cheers
