    Arca-Swiss Lens Board Adapter and Lens Board Compatibility

    I'm posting this because the photos may be useful to people who come across this adapter and board and want to know how old they are and whether they can be used with an Arca-Swiss F-Line 171 camera. I've split this into two posts due to forum attachment limits. I want to thank Arca-Swiss maven Emmanuel Bigler for the information in these posts.

    I purchased an early 1980s Rodenstock Grandagon MC f/6.8 90mm lens and it came with the recessed adapter and flat lens board in the photos. The lens and lens board are Copal 0. Emmanuel says that the Arca-Swiss logo on these components (photo, post #7) was in use before Philippe Vogt purchased Arca-Swiss from the Oschwald brothers in 1984.

    Photo #1, Lens Board Adapter, Front
    This Arca-Swiss recessed lens board adapter is 171mm² and will fit my F-Line 171 camera. The recess is about 28mm deep. Philippe Vogt changed the mechanism at the top of the adapter for securing a lens board. As explained below, this adapter will work with the lens board that came with my Rodenstock lens, but not with current Arca-Swiss lens boards.

    Photo #3, Lens Board, Front
    This Arca-Swiss flat lens board is for 6x9. It is 109mm² and has rounded corners and a notch at the top. It works with the 171 adapter, but not with current Arca-Swiss 6x9 cameras. Newer 6x9 lens boards are 110mm². As shown below, the notch at the top of the lens board works together with the mechanism on the adapter to secure the board. Later Arca-Swiss 6x9 lens boards don't have a notch. The white rectangle just to the right of the notch will be referred to below.

    The Rodenstock lens is mounted on the board, with front and rear lens caps on, in this and photo #4.

    Re: Arca-Swiss Adapter and Lens Board Compatibility

    These two photos show how the lens board adapter secures the 109mm² lens board. The Rodenstock lens is mounted on the lens board, with the front lens cap on, in both photos.

    Photo #5, Adapter and Lens Board Unsecured
    Note the mechanism at the top of the adapter. The bluish rectangle in the centre is part of that mechanism. The notch at the top of the lens board makes room for it. The whitish rectangle to the right is part of the lens board. In the photo, the two rectangles have space between them; the top of the adapter and the top of the lens board are not yet connected.

    Emmanuel Bigler provided me with quite a bit more information on Arca-Swiss lens board compatibility. I'll ask him for permission to post his message to me, or perhaps he will post it himself.

    Re: Arca-Swiss Lens Board Adapter and Lens Board Compatibility

    Emmanuel Bigler has given me permission to post the full e-mail that he sent me about these pre-1984 Arca-Swiss components and their compatibility with more recent components. Emmanuel lives in Besançon, where Arca-Swiss is located, and knows rather a lot about these cameras:

    Regarding Arca Swiss lens boards.

    Old A/S logos usually denote pre-1984 A/S Oschwald products.

    But 171 mm boards are compatible between pre-1984 Oschwald and modern 171 mm F-line products.

    - Pre-1984, i.e. Oschwald 171 mm lens boards are fully compatible with all modern F-line 171 mm cameras;

    - If any lens comes with such a 171mm lens board, be it a pre-1984 (flat) or modern F-line (slightly recessed) you can mount any 171x171 mm A/S lens board directly on any modern 171 mm F-line camera;

    - regarding smaller lens boards intended for 6x9 cameras, but actually very useful for 4x5 and 5x7 A/S cameras as well (all my lenses so far are mounted on a 110 mm 6x9 A/S F-line lens board), pre-1984 6x9 Oschwald lens boards for the 6x9 cm format differ with modern F-line cameras.

    - 6x9 Oschwald lens boards are 109x109 mm square with round corners, and most of them have a notch on top;
    - 6x9 F-line lens boards, the current ones, are 110x110 mm square, round corners, no notch.

    So as a summary

    - if you have a 171 mm A/S camera, either a pre-1984 Oschwald or a modern F-line, any 171 mm A/S board, old or recent, will fit;
    - if you have a pre-1984 Oschwald 109 mm lens board, it will directly fit only pre-1984 6x9 Oschwald cameras;
    - if you have 110 mm lens board with no notch, it will directly fit only a modern 6x9 F-line camera with 110 mm standards, or any camera, any brand, fitted with an adapter plate from F-line 110 mm A/S to [your A/S or non A/S camera].

    If a smaller 109 mm or 110 mm lens board is mounted on a A/S or 3-rd party 171 mm adapter plate, il will fit any A/S 171mm camera, be it pre-1984 Oschwad or modern F-line.

    Re: Arca-Swiss Lens Board Adapter and Lens Board Compatibility

    Wow, that's a lot of good info re: Arca lens board adapters. I wish I could find a 110mm 6x9 adapter that would accept a standard Technika lens board. I tried the one from Luland, but it didn't fit my front standard. I've even checked with Mr. Arca himself (Rod K) and he knows only of the Luland one. Hard for me to believe that no one ever made what would seem like a pretty common adapter.

    Arca-Swiss Lens Board Adapter and Lens Board Compatibility

    Third party copies of Arca-Swiss boards and adapters often fail to take into account the variation in Arca-Swiss boards, particularly the light-traps.

    The four Arca-Swiss boards here are all recent or current design 110mm recessed or flat lensboards.

    Steve Grimes & co make an excellent Linhof to 110mm adapter. It fits all the various 110mm front standards I have used to date.

    Pre-1984 Arca-Swiss Oschwald Lens Board Adapter and Lens Board Compatibility

    Hello from France!

    The images posted above clearly identify pre-1984 Arca Swiss parts.
    The following A3-size catalog in pdf (text is in German, sorry) allows us to identify and put a part# on those venerable elements of the Arca Swiss Oschwald system.

    See page 4 of this pdf for a complete listing of Oschwald part#

    https://galerie-photo.com/manuels/de...llemand-A3.pdf

    Very probably the lens shown on pictures above is mounted on a standard 6x9 Oschwald board
    9.1 standard lens board 110/110 mm for 6/9 and 4/5" "field" cameras

    Please note that the Oschwald catalog mentions "110 mm"; actually those pre-1984 Oschwald boards are slightly smaller. They could probably fit on a modern F-line 6x9, with some amount of play. Generous application of black gaffer tape could fix the problem, including making the notch light-tight

    And the adapter board is very probably
    8.32 Reduction plate from 171 mm boards to [110-109 mm] 6x9 boards

    This is an ASCII OCR transcription of the scanned catalog, sections dealing with lens boards and adapter boards.

    Glossary:
    Normal-Objektivplatte = Standard lens board
    konisch = conical, refers to the "field" 4x5" camera with small 109-110 mm lens boards

    part# 9.3 is mysterious for me, never heard of 143 mm A/S Oschwald lens boards before reading the details of the listing this morning!
    "f. Dist. Einst. Gerät" = "f." means "für" = for, "Einst. Gerät" = Einstell Gerät, probably a distance setting device ????

    Weitwinkel-Platte or Weitwinkelplatte = recessed lens board for wide-angle lenses
    tief = deep - depth

    Objektivplatte für Reflex = 109 mm recessed lens boards for use with the 6x9 Arca Swiss Oschwald reflex camera (a rarity)

    9.1 Normal-Objektivplatte 110/110 mm 6/9 und 4/5" konisch
    9.2 Normal-Objektivplatte 171/171 mm 4/5" - 13/18 - 20/25
    9.3 Normal-Objektivplatte 143/143 mm f. Dist. Einst. Gerät 4/5" ???? a mysterious device!
    9.4 Weitwinkel-Platte 110/110 mm, 15 mm tief
    9.5 Weitwinkel-Platte 110/110 mm, 26 mm tief
    9.6 Weitwinkel-Platte 110/110 mm, 40 mm tief
    9.7 Objektivplatte für Reflex, 110/110 mm, 26 mm tief, 6/9
    9.8 Objektivplatte für Reflex, 110/110 mm, 40 mm tief, 6/9
    9.9 Objektivplatte für Reflex, 143/143 mm, 26 mm tief, 4/5"
    9.10 Objektivplatte für Reflex, 143/143 mm, 55 mm tief, 4/5"
    9.11 Weitwinkelplatte, 171/171 mm, 26 mm tief, 4/5" - 13/18 - 20/25
    9.12 Weitwinkelplatte, 171/171 mm, 55 mm tief, 4/5" - 13/18 - 20/25

    Reduktionsplatte = reduction plate

    reduction plates for mounting smaller film formats to a bigger rear standard
    8.24 Reduktionsplatte von 4/5" auf 6/9
    8.25 Reduktionsplatte von 13/18 auf 6/9
    8.26 Reduktionsplatte von 13/18 auf 4/5"
    8.27 Reduktionsplatte von 18/24 - 20/25 auf 4/5"
    8.28 Reduktionsplatte von 18/24 - 20/25 auf 13/18

    reduction lens board adapter to mount A/S smaller boards to a bigger A/S camera front standard
    8.31 Reduktionsplatte 171/171 mm auf 143/143 mm
    8.32 Reduktionsplatte 171/171 mm auf 110/110 mm
    8.33 Reduktionsplatte 143/143 mm auf 110/110 mm

    Reduktions-Adapter = reduction adapter for mounting non-A/S lens boards on an A/S camera

    mit Verriegelung = with locking device

    Platte = plate, lens board
    alte Ausf. = alte Ausführung = old design, old version
    neu Ausf. = neu Ausführung = new design, new version

    I am not sure to identify Linhof sizes; very probably "75/81" refers to the smaller Baby Linhof 6x9 boards, and "97/100" refers to the modern 96x99 mm Linhof Technika board.

    20.1 Reduktions-Adapter 13/18 auf 4/5", mit Verriegelung

    Re: Arca-Swiss Lens Board Adapter and Lens Board Compatibility

    Thanks to Emmanuel Bigler for the pre-1984 PDF and for tying these components to part numbers. This iPhone photo shows the Arca-Swiss logo on these components. I didn't spend time correcting colour in the photo. The light colour in the logo is a very light silver, and the black is a dense black. The Arca Swiss lettering is sharper than in this handheld photo.

    Re: Arca-Swiss Lens Board Adapter and Lens Board Compatibility

    One other comment. While the Linhof Tech board is OK for most 4x5/5x7 lenses, its light trap ring on the back of the board, and the hole to correctly accept same, is sometimes not compatible with many 8x10 and 5x7 and larger format lenses. The lens's rear groups are often larger or very tight, to allow the passage of the these lens rear groups into the body of the LF camera.
