The Reverend Steven Shuart sold large format stuff on Shutterbug for decades. Now he sells on Ebay as "photofinder"

He has been cutting Plaubel Makina ground glass for me, not too bad price and he knows how to precision cut.

Give him the size and he will do a good job cutting it for you

He's also good for flanges and unusual boards. Knows his stuff

I prefer to hand grind my own

I can make up to 11X14 while watching a movie

    Smaller is faster

I have small bags of telescope grinding grit

Very cheap and I can make it exactly how I want

Years and years ago...Will Whitaker (RIP) gifted me a good amount of (Willman Bell) grit which was left over from his telescope grinding. I still have enough of this to make quite a few large screens. Thanks Will!

Indeed, it's dated, but it lists his email and that's how we communicate.

In Alan Greene's book Primitive Photography he gives instructions on using skim milk to make a focusing screen. I haven't tried it yet. I may give it a try just for fun.

I did grind one when I made an 8.5 X 15 back for my 8X10 camera. Just took a couple hours and it came out nicely.

What size grit(s) do you recommend using?

Been awhile since I've used my (Will W's) grit...but I do believe that it is #500 carborundum (or corundum?), which gives a good balance of fineness and detail. The finer the brighter...but at some point too much detail will be lost.

Finer doesn't equal brighter, in my experience.
