    How to use enlarger filters?

    Hi,

Just a post to ask how the filters are supposed to be used in L138 enlargers. I assume it will be similar to other enlarger types.

There is a drawer that pulls out from the side of the enlarger. The drawer is in the light path after the heat glass and before the mirror.

I have a set of Ilford filters that are around 15cm square. What do I do with it all ? Do I cut them to size ?

Sorry for being a novice !

    Rgds,
    Steve

    Thanks for the reply ic.

So the filters I have are made for something else ... and I would need to make my own glass-mountings and cut these ones. Not something I'd like to do.

You can cut the 15cm filters down. They stay in the drawer fine without adding any glass.

I made a glass sandwich to insert the filters in it and then put the assembly in the filter drawer. You can also lay a sheet on top of one of the condensers. Either will probably require cutting filter sheets down to the right size. My recollection is that Rosco made the gels I use. One of the NY stores should have them available. L

Thanks all for the replies. The B&H store sells 'colour correction filters for performance art. Are these the ones you are using Luis ? I see nothing for the B&W print industry nor so much any photographic print industry either mind you.

This is what I cut down before I built my LED head. The nice thing is they are speed balanced and the steps work well on a range of papers.

If you want to do split grade printing you can get a strong yellow and strong magenta and swap them for each half of the exposure. I imagine you could get those locally from a plastics supplier or theater supply house.

The ones Larry posted above will work. You may also find 12” Ilford versions.

CC filters are for correcting the color temp. When taking pictures. They are not made to withstand the heat in a lamp head.
You need variable contrast printing filters, like Ilford, Kodak, etc.

I use Ilford MG filters cut to the size of the drawer. They lay in top of the condenser. No glass.
Another option is to simply use an under the lens filtering system. Easier and faster than the drawer method.
