Could be, Jac. A friend of mine's father was a Navy photographer during the war. He told her, leaning over the opening in the bottom of the plane, "There was a leather strap, but it was too confining." He flew in a four-engined "Privateer".
The curator and staff are doing a GREAT job! Last year the "battle bridge" and "navigation bridge" had a grand opening. Five years ago, exposed to the elements, it looked like rust and a poor paint-over. Now it looks fantastic! They are steadily working their way from front of the superstructure to the back.
Great job. Thanks. Will see it the next time I get to Alabama. The Sloss Furnace in Birmingham is well worth the trip. Would have been amazing to see when it was working.

Thanks for posting the information about this wonderful project, it is fantastic. My father was a Navy photographer stationed in the South Pacific during WWII.
Robert...
Birmingham is home to me. Sloss Furnaces are a good B&W environment! Carlile's Barbecue near there is a good PORK environment, BTW!
West of town on I-20/59 is the Bucksville exit. If you can find your way through there (use GPS!), check out Tannehill Iron Works. Not as alluring as Sloss, but old Civil War era stone furnaces that sat abandoned until the 1970's. It is a State Park with camping facilities. Pretty cool. Mike
