On good thing about the nitrocellulose finish on your camera is that an overcoat of fresh lacquer softens the existing finish, this can melt the surface checking without having to remove the underlying finish. However, It can also imbed dirt in the finish if preparation is not good. You can also do spot repair with retarder.

Cheapo brands like Minwax will water-spot.
Drew, I believe it was Profin that I used on my camera. I had no idea of the ingredients, only that it worked really well. I didn't know they were a NW product. It's a good one!

On guitars, finish blems are often French polished (shellac) as it will safely cover a # of finishes and blend well...

Why not just go to the liquor store and buy a bottle of Everclear?

FYI folks...Everclear is banned in Cali. The nearest state that the OP could buy it in is Arizona! It's also banned in NV and several other states.

Got a full bottle right here. For emulsions. But that Amazon 200 proof is cheaper.

So.... 5 pages, nearly 50 comments, and no one actually knows what 'Dorff used on their cameras in the 50s?

How would we? Only people age 86 and above were of employment age in 1950.

And those were a few craftsman using whatever they could find after the War.

Makes it probably only 10 ever really knew and they are not reading this forum.

Barry Cochran probably knows, but he's not too anxious to speak to me these days, seeing as I keep bugging him to send the V8 he owes me. I will ask him, just for the heck of it.
