Come and see what I have done up and until now at www.neilsphotography.co.uk
I host my photos on Dropbox. You then enter the link with img tags.

Upload your photo to dropbox. Click share. Click "create link". Click "copy link" Now type the following. I'm going to add a * so that it doesn't act like a real html tag. So, for example:
[*img]https://www.dropbox.com/s/6z1k2tf117k8svr/David_1200.jpg?dl=0[*/img] Now change the "dl=0" to "raw=1"
So: [*img]https://www.dropbox.com/s/6z1k2tf117k8svr/David_1200.jpg?raw=1[*/img]
Remove the two "*" and it gives:

Forget the [img] [/img] tags and just post a link. If you really care, include a comment with image size.
That way those of us on slow connections can ignore and move on.
If I am not mistaken, anything above a certain size (800x600 or so) gets reduced to a clickable thumbnail. Try using a smaller size image.
Depends how you upload it.
If you either upload from your own machine, or if you point to a web-hosted image and leave the box ticked ' Retrieve remote file and reference locally', then you'll get a thumbnail.
If you don't tick the box, the image is scaled by the browser to the available width, but I think the whole image is downloaded. That uses the <img> tags; it might be possible to provide a display width parameter but it would still download the full thing.
While I appreciate Jac's bandwidth concerns, I'm afraid that I *won't* post with the horrible compression that the local files use (except for e.g. examples of DIY stuff); there doesn't seem to be a lot of point in displaying high-resolution images that have already suffered from JPEG and then get stuffed even more.
On the other hand, 12k by 10k uncompressed TIFF files are just plain mean...
(I've just started posting to imgur; right click to 'view image' (for firefox; I don't know how other browsers do it) to get the direct link.)

So we are left to post links, no? I don't think the forum diminishes linked-to images.
Here is a little test. The image was ideal for JPEG compression, so here it is.
http://www.digoliardi.net/toobig.jpg (~17 Mb, 12,000px × 9,318px)
Forgive for the experiment. Let's see how it comes down.
Thank you,
That comes down as a 17MB jpeg of a 120MB image; it doesn't appear to have suffered further compression.
But I explained myself poorly: my understanding is that if you make a direct link to an image it's delivered as stored, then resized to the page width by the browser. If you 'view image' (or the non firefox equivalents) then you get the full works.
If you upload from your PC direct to the forum, that's massively compressed; if you download from a web address but leave the box ticked so the image is stored on the forum, it is also compressed.
