    Re: August 2016 Portraits

This image is part of the series from a session with emerging actor Tyler Hubbard. I am working on an article about why I still choose to shoot film and what the process, cameras, films and processing approaches bring to my work. You will be able so read the story shortly here: www.scottphoto.co/blog/

This image is of my nephew-- a short portrait session, however, it was my first portrait with my camera which was undergoing its first test, a portrait. This camera, one I have been restoring, working on, learning about, is a 6.5 x 8.5 Scovill Albion field camera with a Rochester Victor lens on it (1889)(1881). The film holders 6.5 x 8.5 had to be adapted to this camera and had 5x7 film adapters within this older, larger film holder allowing the use of 5x7 film which was totally new to me as well.

I am having another 6.5 x 8.5 film holder adapted to my camera so I will have 4 5x7 negatives to work with. Further testing will be conducted, but this first portrait, in my opinion is outstanding.Click image for larger version.

    "A Miracle Gift"

(yes, there are light flare, it is what is it)

Susanne is dying. No, (hopefully) not tomorrow or next week, but as a metastatic cancer patient, it will kill her. This is why you don't hear about metastatic cancer with the "Pink" campaign and such because these patients do not get better.

We had never met in person and with our ignorance of Midwest geography, we did not realize that we were only 3 hours away from Susanne and her wife, Jenn, from Kansas City where we were attending an event. When we found out, we did the only thing possible: at the last day of the event, we got up with 2 hours of sleep and rented a car from the airport, drove 3 hours to meet them, did some photos and had lunch, then drove 3 hours back to the airport to catch our flight.

Susanne called it a "miracle gift", I call it the least we can do for them.

I try to keep pointy things away from my Heliars. It scares me.
