Have you looked into push button quick threading nuts ?
They're not too expensive but work very well.

Here's one way of making a split nut:
Yes, there is an axle under the tape. The paper clip just slides up to clamp the jaws around the threads. Other than being bulky, the only drawback is the clip can be lost. It wouldn't be hard to add a safety string to it.
Camera shops usually have a bin of broken lens. I salvaged a focusing helix from an Olympus OM 50mm and adapted it to fit LF lens.
Interesting approach! Of course, the clamp from Home Depot posted above would also work, and may be more easily attached permanently or chained to it... Will remember.
