Affinity Photo - a useful alternative to Photoshop?

Affinity Photo seems like it might be a good alternative to Photoshop. I tried various beta versions and was favorably impressed. I'm not sure as I have not done exhaustive testing but I think it may be a very good and less much expensive alternative.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on Affinity Photo and whether it might be a useful alternative?

the video is pretty intense it looks very promising , but I have never used it and I too have interest in others opinions.

I would be concerned about lead in time learning this program, as its taken me years to get a decent handle on PS for my needs, and Lightroom is also something I am still learning as it
    gets better.

Do you think Affinity Photo would have a lot of tools that a photoshop user could easily use??

    thanks for posting

I went and searched for it to see what's offered, particularly curious about whether full 16-bit editing was included. It was. Unfortunately, from the perspective of someone who's not a member of the iCult, Affinity doesn't seem to offer a windows version. If and when one is added, I'd probably be willing to buy a copy.

Looks like a Windows Beta version of Affinity Photo and Designer are now available for free. It requires 64-bit Windows 7 and above.

As with the Mac version, Affinity Photo for Windows will also cost $50 — a one-time payment — when the free beta test period ends and the app officially launches.

Too bad it's for MAC only.

Get the GIMP. It's free and probably all you will ever need. If you think really different (ly), you can install Linux and run many other great free graphics programs like SANE for scanning.

GIMP isn't capable of editing in 16 bits. Maybe someday...

Thanks, Neal. I've tried GIMP and it's okay but not in the same league as PS. I used PS for years in my job but after early medical retirement I can't afford to buy Adobe products.

Both GIMP and PS are too complex for me. I haven't felt a real need to go beyond Lightroom. I tried Darktable on Linux some time ago. I'd love to go full Linux at home, but there is just enough jankiness about Linux, IMO, that keeps me from using it at home.

Neal, perhaps you can enlighten us on your Linux workflow.

FWIW, I am a long time Linux user and use it daily for software development, mostly command line. It drives my coworkers nuts to see me using vim.

It looks like a nice application but there's no way to download a trial version. I find that surprising. I'll contact them and see if I've missed something somewhere.
