    150 mm for 5x8

I currently have a 150 Sironar S that I used on my 4x5 and also used on my 5x7. It covered 5x7, but not by much. Now I thought I could use it on my 5x8, but it just will not cover. I think it has 231mm of coverage and the 5x8 takes about 245mm if my math is correct. Without getting into the huge 150s that cover 8x10 (I have the Nikkor 150SW) what modern 150s are out there that would cover 5x8 and fit in a Copal 1? If my research is correct, it looks like the Sironar W and Super Symmar HM might be the only games in town. Both are around 252mm in coverage. Any suggestions? Thanks. Jim

Should not need to do math to find the diagonal. Just measure it.

If you want compact and inexpensive, I'd go with the Fujinon 180mm with inside lettering. 305mm coverage and just a little bigger than a regular 150.

Old angulon 165mm will cover. Dagor also.

The 150mm G Claron covers with much room to spare. The smaller full aperture has never been an issue for me, but I have a Maxwell screen. On a plain gg you might have an issue with that.

The APO and L versions of the Symmar are spec'd as 5X7 lenses by Schneider, but you'll get more useful coverage out of the Claron.

Jim, you want a lens that covers at least 80 degrees. The more the better.

Think what you will of manufacturers' coverage claims, Rodenstock doesn't claim that the 150/5.6 Apo-Sironar-W covers that much and Schneider doesn't claim that the 150/5.6 Super Symmar HM does either. Same goes for G-Clarons, although enthusiasts insist their coverage is much greater than Schneider claims.

Image is from a 150mm G Claron, 2 inches of front rise. Yes, I insist it has more usable coverage that Schneider suggests.

Computar 150mm f9 would be a fine choice. It's tiny, and just misses the corners on 8x10.

+1. It's my most-used wide for whole plate, would give ample room for movement on 5x8. A bit hard to find, though.

Depending on your typical focus distances and how much movement you need, the Apo-Sironar(-W)/Sinaron-WS might be OK - I use it routinely with some movement on 5x7.

I believe all 150mm Graphic-Kowa are exactly the same as the Computar... easier to find and cheaper.

I was searching this info online this afternoon and what I found tends to say they both have the same amount of coverage. While my eyes prefer a 5.6 lens, the Kowa Graphic might be the way to go. Now to find one. Thanks to all for the info.
