Does 18x24 interchage with 8x10?

OK I'm a metric ignoramus.

Maybe it comes from the trauma experienced with my first 35mm SLR camera back in the 1970's. I asked for 35mm film and they gave me a yellow box that said 135mm film.

The clerk's visual acuity was suspect.
My sincerity slandered!
The clerks intelligence questioned!
Words were exchanged!
Tempers flaired!
Security called!

Traded the SLR in for a 4 INCH x 5 INCH Speed Graphic with a 6 INCH lens as one of the conditions for my probabtion and they still won't let me back in that Wal-mart;-)

So now I'm curious, will 18x24 sheet film fit and function in an 8x10 film holder? Anyone out there know?

Sure 18x24cm sheet film fits inside a 8"x10" hodler ;-) but fits sooooo loosely that the film will drop as soon as you manipulate the loaded holder ;-);-)

Not kidding : for 18x24 film, you need... a 18x24cm film holder ; both 18x24 and 8"x10" "modern" holders fit the same international back ; film is placed exactly at the same depth for both with respect to the camera back. 8"x10" is called : 20x25 in metric countries.

Same applies for 9x12cm and 4"x5" holders, different non-compatible dimensions inside, but 100% compatible outside for any 9x12-4"x5" international back. For 5"x7" and 13x18cm same story except that a 5"x7" film being smaller only by 1-2 mm, will fit inside a 13x18 holder and will stay in place much longer than a 18x24 film inside a 8"x10" holder ;-).
And yes, black and white film in 18x24 cm is still available, but I'm not sure if 18x24 holders are still on catalog from cut film holder manufacturers. For example, 6.5x9, 9x12 and 13x18 holders are readily available as new from Fidelity.

The reason why I asked was that I saw J and C has Foma 18x24 on sale and I thought of trying it out in the 8x10 'dorff since I've heard some good things about Foma in 35mm(or is it 135mm?)

John. Cambo has 18x24 Fidelity holders on their product list. Same for Linhof, but you never know whether a web site is up to date or not ;-) e-bay Germany is probably the best source for used 18x24 holders. Now you could try to tape a 18x24cm film inside a 20x25cm holder with a few centimetres of "magic scotch tape". But is this really reasonable even for an un-compromising metric-o-phile like you ? ;-);-)
