What is funny and (to me) ill-mannered is watching movies where press photographers of the day simply pop out the expended hot bulb onto the ground or floor. I will bet the cleaning crews really loved to sweep up all that broken glass. Not.

In the movie of the life of Howard Hughes, _The Aviator_, press photos were shown dropping the bulbs on the ground when Hughes arrived at an opening and they were shooting like mad. You can hear the sound go the bulbs crunching in the soundtrack.

I don't believe that as true here in the States.

Ortho film certainly existed, but I never encountered any for sale (in the 1960s).
Panchromatic film such as Tri-X was readily available.

I occasionally used Kodak Professional Copy Film 4125 in the 1970s and 1980s. It was a fairly slow ortho film with exaggerated highlight contrast: the amateur's path to Karsh-like portraits of men.

Many press photographers of the past until the 70's utilised ortho film as opposed to panchromatic emulsions, therefore they couldn't use filters.
