New Film: Raymond Depardon's Journal de France

This film, released at Cannes (out of competition) in 2012, is now being shown in the UK and is likely to show up in the U.S. in the near future. The fact that the UK release is apparently national (see The Guardian video review below) must mean that the film has been subtitled in English.

If you live in Quebec, or have access via a Virtual Private Network to a Quebec server, it is available now from the National Film Board of Canada for download rental. The NFB version, which I have not been able to access because my VPN uses an Ontario server, may well be without subtitles.

As recently as two weeks ago, the film was available, in French, in full on the internet, but I can no longer find the link. It may have been taken down.

    Trailer:

    The Guardian's print review (January 30th): http://www.theguardian.com/film/2014...-france-review

Financial Times print review (January 30th): http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/2/0cd33...#axzz2tSBK5fox

    The Guardian's video review (January 30th): http://www.theguardian.com/film/vide...e-video-review

The National Film Board of Canada link: https://www.nfb.ca/film/journal_de_france/rental

Brief Wikipedia article (in French) on co-filmmaker (also Depardon's spouse and Éric Rohmer collaborator), Claudine Nougaret: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudine_Nougaret

Wikipedia article (in English) on Depardon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Depardon

If you speak French, there are several video interviews with Nougaret and Depardon about the film on YouTube and elsewhere.

The documentary was apparently shot in 35mm on this camera: http://www.abelcine.com/store/Aaton-...e-35mm-Camera/

One thing is clear. Depardon has the spiffiest dark cloth ever. And he has good taste in tripods

P.S. I accidentally posted this earlier to the Resources sub-forum. It should be deleted from there.

Four of the links in the above post got mangled when I transferred the post from Resources to On Photography. Here are corrections:

There's a bug with their rental server, it's telling me that the film is not available in my region (Quebec).

I don't understand why the rest of Canada cannot download it, since the NFB is publicly funded?? Bummer...

I assumed that one had to be in Quebec because I couldn't download the film from an Ontario server. However, look at Jody's post above. It is possible that it is just a technical problem and that, if the problem is fixed, the film can be downloaded anywhere in Canada. It's even possible that the NFB has an English-subtitled version, since we know that it is being shown in the UK with subtitles.

It would be great if someone in Canada could contact the NFB to tell them that there is an issue with renting/downloading the film. As a distributor of the film, the NFB has a distinct interest in fixing this.

People interested in this film may also want to watch a subtitled interview with Depardon done on January 7, 2014. There's a thread about the interview, and a link, here: http://www.largeformatphotography.in...ymond-Depardon
