Thank you for the nice words Monty. You've described exactly what I like about this image. The shoot was awful though. I was so mad after it I had to make me a large gin&tonic.
The word you mention was literally "no" which she replied to everything I asked her to do, and I am not demanding at all. I thought they would all be out of focus since she kept moving on purpose every time I focused.
I never crop my images. I want to think it will force me to compose better next time.

Speaking of "NO", my friend Tony used to have three "NO"s regarding photography:

No kids
No weddings

Couldn't you bribe her with a treat, or say "if you hold still, your mom will like the picture" or such? I don't shoot kids much, except my own, and they know to hold still.

I have found the only thing that really works is bribery - if you do X then you can have Y

Girls always have a long list of things they want


However you managed - you have achieved a fabulous photograph

I photograph my own kids. I have better luck when they are not tired or hungry. Can't skip meals to pose. Can't do it right before bed. That said, I like that portrait.

I have to practice bribery. It caught me off guard, she's done ads so I thought she would be used to it. Her parents were there trying to get her to cooperate. If they couldn't make it I doubt I would.
