I took this a few months back on 8x10 and 4x5. This is the smaller version shot with a no name Petzval. I can't remember much about it. It looks much better large.

Keeping life in still life and working with common objects at hand or in the yard. Got a space I can set up and look at an idea for a bit before hitting the shutter. Thinking them through a few incarnations before a film holder goes in.

    Several versions of this.

I'm shooting some static still life-s if the idea is compelling, but mostly trying to make sure they are some image that requires a photograph to record- burning, wilting, blooming, melting, balancing, et.

That's what I consider a static still life vs one that is a little more dynamic. The static one does have a fair amount of "balance" built in.

This idea sitting in front of the camera right now. Gotta have a little more light explosion going on inside the can. Might need to go re-shoot holes in another can. Probably going to elevate it on something. Maybe a pottery shard. I do like the bottom line of the can on the wood. Maybe just lift it on three little stacks of coins. Maybe nothing.

I'm about half way there. Probably work the idea with another can and more fire inside. Typical procession in a still life work. Takes several incarnations.

Light explosion is a bundle of kitchen matches in a rubber band. I light it from the back. It's a stupid idea, but that doesn't mean it isn't a COMPLEX stupid idea. I hope it wakes up quickly. Been looking at these old cans for years and wondering what to make of them.

Two more ideas sitting ready if I can just get this can out of the way.

    Re: Still-Life Images, 2014

Here's a stupid idea that got complex and died anyway. Tin can, split open, with candles and ice inside. Sitting in a wooden bowl turned on it's side and on top of a milk carton with a candle in it. (thought the carton might glow more, but the candle inside goes out. Could cut some ventilation holes, but now I don't like the milk carton.) Might go back to just the can. Maybe I need to shoot holes in it and start over. But this idea...just stayed stupid. I did learn a few tricks while building it. With a more serious refrigerator I could spray-mist the whole shebang and put a coating of ice on it. Maybe that's the ticket.

Could drop the carton and add another smaller rusty can on top and let the flame go through two cans. Hmmmmmm.

I like the bowl and have used it as background on a couple of calendar shoots, but tough to wrangle on it's side.
