David Plowden was making similar images in the 1960s and 1970s. The decay of small towns is not a new phenomenon...

Thanks for the historical view. Maybe an interesting re-photography project to see how 50 years has changed things? At any rate, I think the gulf between small town life and the metropolitan lifestyle is far greater today. I'll look at the Plowden images.

Agreed.
Plowden is a wonderful photographer. I have his book "Imprints," which was a retrospective at the time it was published. Excellent reproductions, and can be found used (it's out of print) for almost nothing.
