    My guess is negative holder for medium format (6x6cm). The Technika could be converted to an enlarger, Linhof made at least two different light sources for it.

    Even before I saw Arne's answer, that is what I thought.

    Is the box the original one for the item? Have you tried a translation of the writing on the box?

    What is the text on the box? I can't read it from the low-res image you posted. It would certainly tell us (or those of us who read German).

    It would also double as a composition aid - slide in the back of the 4x5 and you get a masked 6x7 or 6x6 (hard to tell) view.
    I just took delivery today of a Tech III with a similar device for 6x9 in the back of its original back, but a bit of a diy one that was permanently in place.
    None of your fancy inked lines here, you know. Simple, honest black cardboard cut-outs.
