    flash meter

The time has come for me to buy a flash meter. I am looking for something simple, small and lightweight. I don't need a spot meter function, just an ambient (not sure if I'm using the correct terminology) reading and a flash reading. I was looking at the digiflash meter from Gossen. Does anyone use one of these for flash?

I plan to use a flash for fill while outdoors. The meter doesn't have to trigger anything.

I see there is a dome for the iphone and the light meter app. If only someone would make an app for flash.

    thanks,
    chris

Minolta IVf or a Sekonic L-398

both quite small, light, and use AA batteries(IIRC, both do)
both come up on CL in major markets somewhat frequently. Get a clean, used one. Send it to Quality Light + Metric here in LA to get calibrated, and you'll be good for another 5yrs.

    Re: flash meter

My opinion only, but I think that one of the best ever made is the Minolta Flash III. I've had mine since the late seventies, use it constantly and have never needed to have it calibrated or serviced in any way. Still works to perfection. It has reflected and incident functions, does both flash and ambient readings, calculates multiple flash pops needed to achieve a certain f stop, and has accessories that allow for a semi spot reading of either 5 or ten degrees.

They go for peanuts today. Minolta has always made fabulous meters so either the Flash III or later entities should serve you extremely well.

Any of the meters mentioned above are excellent, I can only suggest what I know, and that is to add to the chorus praising the Minolta IVf.
It runs for years on a single AA battery, does all the basics perfectly, and seems to be very well calibrated.
I have two, and they give the exact same readings every time; kind of spooky

Minolta Autometer IV F. Does everything but 1 deg spot and it plugs into my sinar Booster-1 focal plane probe. Have a 9deg spot attachment for it.

I know its old, but it works great.

There are only three types of mounting flanges; too big, too small and wrong thread!

    Not Minolta.
    1. they are no longer being made because Sony bought Minolta and stopped making them
    2. for repairs, Sony wants a minimum of US $180 just to look at it

Get a Sekonic - they are still being made and supported.

I like my Polaris. Does ambient, flash and multiple flash. Runs on a AA battery.
