Ilford Photo to create directory of public/community darkrooms

I saw this announcement earlier today on Ilford Photo's Facebook page. I'd recommend anyone who knows of public or community darkrooms, or people who teach traditional darkroom techniques, send the information to the e-mail address provided:

Thanks for taking part in our recent survey. It was a great help and has confirmed our darkroom sharing concept has enough support for us to go ahead and make the investment in the new website.

In due course we will be announcing that our worldwide darkroom website is ready to launch. In the meantime we need your help in finding all those community and public darkrooms. It's our intention to get these darkrooms listed on the site before the public launch and to give them special status that recognises the outstanding support they give. If you know of any please ask them to get in touch through news@harmantechnology.com

We also want to locate all those tutors who offer courses in darkroom technique. We are not looking for full time courses in colleges, just those specialist printers/photographers who offer the many and varied short courses in darkroom techniques.

I'm guessing there's about 4 public darkrooms in the US.

I know of two in the LA area alone so I hope that we will all be pleasantly surprised...

I'm aware of two of them in this general neighborhood, plus community college courses open to the general public for a very modest fee.

Bit of a crass comment. I know of a handfull and have been to two and I don't even live in the US. There are far more in comparison to the UK but there is a need for initiatives like this one from Ilford.

I agree, everybody interested in analog photography must make it known and available. Every young photographer I talk to wants to shoot film and use a darkroom.

When finished in a month or 2 my darkroom will be open to my community, but not general public. I'm going to be somewhat picky about who gets access. It's my castle and retirement dream.

Sunday night I went to the 4am hipster bar and met 2 suspects, one already is a film only shooter and the other is an old friend who will make a very angular model.

Today I picked up two enlargers for use by others, I'll add space in my new temporary darkroom, one will cover 35mm to 6x9 the other was I thought a 5x4 I gave away 7 or 8 years ago, it's not but the same model and my old lens (which is very sharp), so who cares

This Ilford initiative is importnant but it's just one way, we have to applaud the work being done by others as well and perhaps Bill Schwaub is one of the best examples. I don'y know Bill but his enthusiasm has certainly inspired many photographers. There must be others so please tell us about them, we want analog photography to prosper.
