Just picked up a Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24" LED LCD Monitor on Amazon for $275-hell of a monitor for that price. Beats the hell out of my Lacie 319 that just died.

Thank you for the recommendation, Kirk. I'd like to upgrade soon. How does it do differentiating the differences between near white tones?

Hmm. Not sure how to test that. I use a ColorMunki Display calibration. I looked back at some of my some of my best B&W with puffy sunlit thunderheads and they look fine. But all of these files would have already been tweaked for holding that bright detail in a print. How would you test that Peter?

Peter, I don't know if this really says anything but I went to this website and looked at the top step wedge. I can clearly discern every step in both the shadows and highlights.

Hi Kirk,
Thank you. That helps. My current monitor squashes everything above 253 into pure white. I can use the eye-dropper, of course, but it'd be nice to be able to visually tell 253 from 255.

Kirk, Peter, and anyone else who bought one of these as their main screen for PS editing.... are we still happy? Would you still recommend today? Putting a new system together, and a decent, affordable monitor is the last piece...
Many thanks for sharing your experience.
Works great but be careful some of them suck and won't calibrate. So buy it and calibrate it quick so you can send it back if it blows.

I looked at the monitor on Amazon and made the mistake of reading the reviews and comments about the reviews. I found one here locally on the classifieds and am going to try to look at it tomorrow. Kirk's recommendation is all I need.
