65mm F6.8 barrel-mount Schneider Angulon.

Hi All,

A large format lens I needed to fill a hole in my collection. From German Ebay, the 65mm F6.8 barrel-mounted Schneider Angulon. This lens has no shutter, but works perfectly on my Sinar Normas, with the Sinar Shutter, and bag bellows. Focuses to infinity with no problem (front and rear standards -nearly- touching each other(!). Shown focused on infinity, with a flat standard Norma lensboard, which I just finished cutting, in my workshop.

A sweet lens for 6x9cm rollfilm shooting. Rather rare, I have not seen that many around. Anybody here familiar with using it?

The original Angulon is a "reverse" Dagor design. The maximum aperture is intended for composing/focussing, it needs to be stopped down to f:16 or so to get the corners sharp.
There are Angulons which don't perform so well, due to the inner most (unsupported by anything other than balsam) front and rear elements shifting over time - there may have been QC issues, too.

I probably got lucky with my Angulon 6.8/65 but it's a cracker, one of my sharpest lenses. I always shoot it at f22, ocassionally at f16.

Yes mine is serial number 11 333252 so according to the Schneider website, it is aged between November 1968 and July 1970. The lens is in a modern-looking black barrel, not the shiny chrome that you typically see with the earlier barrel-mounted Schneider lenses. It looks quite sharp on the groundglass, so I am hopeful it will be a good performer for me.

I also have had for many many years the 90mm, 120mm, 165mm, and 210mm Angulons, and I have found them to be very decent performers. I generally shoot them at F/22, if possible. I also have the Super Angulons, but I really do find these Angulons to be extremely good for many of my uses.

I sometimes see the Linhof 65mm F6.8 in compur (I think that was part of the triad for the Baby Technika) but the barrel version is not common around here.

It came in that Compur and was already mounted on a baby graphic lens board. Serial number 7871443 suggests it was made in late 1962.

I think by the time yours was made any possible QC issues were a thing of the past. I have a Linhof-select 90 from about 1960, it's very good. I also have a 90 in a Compur from the mid-50s which has had one of the innermost elements come uncemented, as in floating around loose.

Yes, she is my favourite lens on my Century. There might be better lenses but the Angulon is more than good enough for me.
