    WA lens suggestion for 5x7.

    Hi ya all,

Looking for a solid performer in the neighborhood of 24mm (35mm equiv)....so I'm presuming that it would be around 125mm. I'm not interested in XL or expensive esoteric glass. OK, lets just say $500 would be the cut off price.

Any suggestions punctuated with rationale + appx cost would help too. Thanks for taking the time...

I use both a 90mm Rodenstock and a 120mm Nikkor often on my 5X7, you can get those easily from KEH in nice condition for around your price.

    Also, the Rodenstock Grandagon-N 115mm f6.8 (closer to 125mm).

I have a 72mm XL and find it a bit too wide at times, you could get a 90mm Super Angulon if you like very wide or a 120mm/121mm Super Angulon for a more normal wide angle for 5x7.

    IMHO, the Nikon/Nikkor f5.6 210W and the f8 120SW make a great 2-lens combination for 5x7.

The 120 focal length is the approx. equivalent of a 90mm lens on 4x5.

The large image circle of the 120SW allows for full camera movements.

Although my 90SW will cover 5x7 with limited movements, I find it to be too wide for the format.

    Thanks for quick response.

Hmm, I might be comparing apples to oranges in my own head. I thought that 75mm (in 4x5) was close to 24 (in 35mm).....and 90= 28. Am I looking at different lens tables ?

Between 120/121 Super Angulon and Nikkor 120 SW...what sort of nuances am I looking at ? Contrast, coatings, etc. I did hear some good things about the SW series.

Looks like I have more homework to do.

Re: WA lens suggestion for 5x7.

The Nikon/Nikkor 120SW has almost 25mm more image circle than the Schneider Super Angulon.

Otherwise, they are equal in quality.

    (The 210W for 5x7 is approx. equal to a 150W for 4x5).

You might be looking at the wrong lens table.

    120mm SW Nikkor.

    120mm & 121mm Super Angulon.

    125mm f8, Fujinon

    115mm f6.8 Grandagon

Used the 115mm Grandagon, 120mm Super Angulon, 120mm SW Nikkor.. As a group they are pretty similar. There will be variations within each lens.

In the collection: 72mm f5.6 Super Angulon XL, 110mm f5.6 Symmar XL, 150mm f5.6 Symmar XL, 180mm f9 Fujinon A.. Of these the 110mm & 180mm stays in the case and the others are carried as required. Previously owned, 90mm (Super Angulon, Grandagon), 115mm (Grandagon), 120mm (SW Nikkor & Super Angulon), 150mm Grandagon (huge to carry)

72mm is extremely wide on 5x7, very significant exaggeration of front to back perspective. Center filter highly recommended.

110mm, As wide as usually required, center filter recommended.

    150mm, "wide-normal"

    180mm, "less Wide-normal"

    Vintage:

    120mm Angulon.

    111mm Wide Angle Dagor.

    and others...

    I use a 4 3/8" Dagor & a 150 G Claron for wide angles on my 5x7

One thing that might be important to you is that the 120 Nikon takes a 77mm filter but the 120 Super Angulon, 115 Grandagon and Fuji 125 all use 82mm.
