How much film can you afford to throw away, because you couldn't see the GG well enough to focus? IMO a good loupe is essential for a beginner, especially for learning to use movements. You can't tell if the movements are doing what you want them to if you cannot see the image on the glass. Spend $50 once on a decent loupe, it will last until you lose it or sell it or give it away and be cheaper in the long run.

If you just don't want to spend the money, do what Thebes suggested - but be certain the thing is sharply focussed on the texture of the GG.
