A while ago I eschewed the loupe in favour of a pair of powerful +5.5 reading glasses that cost only £8.95 including P&P on eBay (item # 271669873654). These make it easy to check all the...
I think we really like FUJI because of the packaging and feeling silly for such a lightweight decision to buy and use it, we then come up with other better sounding reasons for choosing it.
Today,...
There's nowt up with it! Make a bottom for it so you can put it on a modern tripod, get a 4x5 back and mount it on a frame to fit the body, do something with that nasty thing at the front that is...
I don't have the same model as you but this video might be of some help before you start using tools like Allen keys that I just don't think should be necessary in normal use. You should be able to...
Which Shen Hao?

I've used this Human Rangefinder for a number of cameras with success. Tick the box if you want a hyperfocal distance chart on the card too.

Yes I was mistaken about the image circle for 5x7, thank you for the correction. The 90mm does allow movements with 4x5. I've used mine for some years now both with and without movements. However,...
None of them but then again I'm mainly working in the landscape. I use a Schneider f6.8 90mm Angulon. Very low cost. Weighs very little. Great coverage (5x7 with no movements).

Then maybe a little bit more agitation?

If I can see the tree as a figure or better still a group of trees as figures and I believe I can render that in my photograph then no effort is spared to obtain the result. This applies whether...
How is the film positioned? I'm convinced that hanging or clipping film vertically leads to streaks, whereas laying the film down flat (as in a tray) means no streaks. Well none so far for me...
On eBay you can buy, from China, a pair of "reading" glasses rated +5.5 or +6.0 wear them instead of messing with the loupe and you can see all the frame and fine adjust the focus at the same time. ...
Sudek made some of his greatest photographs "around the house"...

That's a lovely image Jiri...

Box speed for me too and developed either in 510-PYRO 8.25 minutes or OBSIDIAN AQUA 12 minutes (both at 20 degrees Celsius and both semi-stand). Used mainly for night or hand-held work...

Ignore any "rules". Decide for yourself. Does it look "right" to you? Yes? Then it's perfect and anyone else can like it or lump it. If you really do want the edge defining you could leave the...
Light leak, but it may not be EITHER film holder or camera but BOTH film holder and camera. It looks like the holder may have not been seated completely when in the camera back. Is the holder a...

+1, a cook's blow torch is about the right size and intensity. Circular wafting is the way.

Lovely work!
RR
Yes. It is a compensating developer too.

100 at box speed, developed in OBSIDIAN AQUA 12 minutes semi-stand at 20 degrees C.

Trays are best. Tanks let you work in the daylight. You can have the best of both worlds. Effectively a daylight "tray" that will process four sheets of 4x5 at once. ...
It's all flannel! Muses indeed! In engineering there is an old saying: "If it looks right, it most probably is right." It also applies to making photographs. If it looks right (TO YOU) then it...
Another recommendation for Peak Imaging. Label your boxes with return address and requesting they be sent back to you and they will be returned. 'Phone up and tell them you need some boxes and they...
Whole Plate is my favourite format. Here's how I develop mine in daylight. http://freepdfhosting.com/f640343f29.pdf
Contrary to popular belief, the processors are still easily found and need not...
We are all influenced by everything we see or experience. There is nothing you, or anyone else, can do about that, so if you, or anyone else, see Ansel Adams' images, you and they are influenced by...
Favourite 8x10? My Shen Hao FCL810-A. Why? I have never had any other so know nothing better or worse.

The screws don't need loosening. They should be tight as originally. The little bolts slide back against the nylon friction washers under the screw heads. You slide them forward for the stays to...

Emulsion side down on the platen and a sheet of clean Anti-Newton Ring Glass on the top with the film area guide around it...
Horizontal flip the resultant scan.

It will. They are lovely things to use. Well done on your choice.

I use the Shen Hao and find it light yet rigid when erected. I'm not sure what "parts" you may need in normal use, I suppose you could break the ground glass whilst it was in your bag if you don't...
I have not used it in 8x10 but in 120 I use OBSIDIAN AQUA, 12 minutes @20 deg. Celsius. Agitate for first 60 seconds then 4 times every 2 minutes leaving it for the last 3 minutes with no agitation....
Go to your app store and search for Tomstrails it's free and very good.

The most likely way to fix all this is to learn and use the Zone System. It's worth the work and it stays with you for ever once worked out....

Oh and Ian, that ground glass you made for my whole plate...
It's dirt cheap to make. I got my chemicals via eBay, including the distilled water. The dilution is so tiny. 1ml A, 12.5ml B, made up to 500ml with tap water makes it economical. The stock...
