The aperture diaphragm of Triple Achromatic lens comes between the first and second lens group. Have you checked the three lens groups are all 2 elements cemented?
It was made in Dec 1879 according to H. Thiele's Steinheil book. But the lens type he gave is Tubus 30" which is obviously wrong.
This lens looks very much like an Aplanat.
Could you provide the serial number?
I have a very similar lens, same focus length and aperture. The difference is it has “soft focus lens” on the front rim.
I took the elements out, the front is single convex, the rear is two glass...
Angulon f6.8 lenses are convertible and can use the front and back lens separately to obtain 3 focus length.
The focus length of the front lens is twice of the combined focus length, the rear is 1.5...
As Dan said, F=317mm is a standard focal length for Zeiss Anastigmat lenses. Your lens was made on Jan 30th, 1896 and can cover 8x10 at f12.5. The max coverage is 90 degree according to Zeiss...
Recently picked up two Hermagis portrait lens, both are Petzval type.
SN 17659: (225-Ross-78) in 1878?
SN 18286: (R-21-15-80) in 1880?
The rim holds the aperture blades may further limit the max aperture. So it might be slower than f6.

Is the front achromatic lens missing? I can't see it on eBay listing photos.
No, there is no difference.
Are you shooting with the lens wide open? Normally the process lens is optimized for 1:1 when stopping down to f16 or smaller apertures. Try stopping the lens to f22 or smaller you will get a better...
Thank you, Steve, I will start from 2mm with cardboard paper
I recently picked up a Gundlach Series B No.5 portrait lens which is a 14" f4 Petzval type lens.
After unscrewing the rear lens cell for cleaning, I found the spacer ring between the two elements...
Hi Drew,
Could you please advise how to distinguish real gold dot Dagor from the fake ones? Thank you.
The focus length and coverage of this RVP accord with mine. 10.75” for 5x8 and 12.47 for 6.5x8.5. And the serial numbers are not far away. Maybe TTH changed specifications for later RVPs?
Hi Garrett, that was my thought but it couldn't explain why they rated a 12.47" RVP for whole plate. It should be 15" or for 8x5 plate.
I took a close-up picture of the "R.V.P." engraving. The...
Hi Steven, the engraving is

Bumping up this old thread because I picked up a whole plate camera with an RVP lens which doesn't match the 1904 catalog page.
It says
8 1/2 x 6 1/2 RVP
EQ. FOC. 12.47 IN
on the barrel and...
As Dan said, the lens aperture is limited by the max opening of the Koilos shutter. Your shutter should be no.2 with 25mm opening.
It looks "Thlr" to me. Google says it is a silver coin used in many Europe countries.
According to Thiele's book, this lens was manufactured in 1914 for the camera on a balloon. So it might be used for the military survey.
It is a 3 elements triplet lens and can cover 3 1/2 x 4 3/4...

Steven, this lens is not mine, I found these pictures on a blog. The geared track is missing. Here is the link.
Rudi, one more interesting thing with this lens is the barrel was cut into two...

Thanks Steven. What a terrible mistake I made! I didn’t see the last digit.
Replying this old thread because I saw a Voigtlander Heliar 150mm lens with sn. 601181 mounted in a dail set Compur shutter. The shutter's sn is 524690 which put it in 1922-1923. It appears the lens...
Rudi, this is from 1910 F.F. Meyer catalog.

Hi Steven, in A. Charconnet & A. Laverne catalog, they made some cone portrait lens with 7" glass. The Serie 4 lens mentioned at the bottom of table was the simple achromat lens.

Hi Sean,
Below is a catalog page of Ross portable symmetrical lens. It is a pretty old one because it only existed in Ross catalog till 189x.
The 8" focus length one can cover 8x10 so it should...
For brass barrel lens, I like leather push-on caps. It looks better because the color and style of the lens and caps match. I haven't had issues with fungus on the leather cap. They are stored in a...

Hi Andrew,
You outbid me on this lens. :)
I believe it is a Series VII double protar (or Protarlinse) lens. It was called Anastigmat before 1900 and then Protar.
Two 590mm groups will form a...
Hi Pierre, do you know the buyer? What happened? The seller looks like a legit one.
