michael, doug, and oren: forget my followup questions--i've figured this out
Michael, Doug, and Oren,
Thank you all for replying.
I have a few more questions, if you have the time or are able to answer:
1. Is amberlith ok to use instead of rubylith? The art supply...
I realize the relative paltriness of such questions at this hour, but:
Can someone please tell me the simplest way I can go about making 8x10 contact p rints that will have about a one-quarter...
I would like to convert an 8x10 camera to an 8x10 enlarger to make roughly 12x b w mural prints. For awhile, I had planned on using a cold-head (Aristo) as ligh t source, but now I'm not so sure...
Correction: Tmax 100 11x14 69 box minimum, in 10 sheets per box, not 25 sheets per box
Thanks for everyone's input. I am getting the distinct feeling from most of the replies--and from James Mickelson's in particular as well as another person's off-site--that what I have...
I am currently considering the possibility of moving from 8 x 10 to 11 x 14, wit h the interest in making not just contact prints but also mural enlargements by converting an 11 x 14 camera into a...
Lyle,
Thank you very much for your extensive reply. It really helped me better understand what may have happened. Despite the arrogant and condescending calumny of Pete Andrews's response, I...
I recently tried to photograph a person half-figure laying on top of a LARGE (4f t x 5 ft) mirror using a 4 x 5 camera, 210 Sironar S lens, and one 2040 Dynalit e strobe head (undiffused, with...
Has anyone ever compared Rodenstock's Apo-Ronar MC with its Sironar S or N?
I am contemplating the purchase of a 300mm, 360mm, or 480mm lens for 8 x10 portr aiture relatively close up...
Are there ANY differences whatsoever--in terms of either optical quality or spec ifications--between barrel lenses and the "same" lens that is sold by the manufa cturer ready-made in a shutter?
Is...
Thanks to all who replied. Your feedback and suggestions were very helpful.
James,
No rush--whenever you can find your Schneider lens catalog from the mid or late 1970's I would be very interested in obtaining a copy of it, by whatever means is easiest, email, fax, or...
Does anyone have Schneider large format lens price lists from the years 1981-89? More than prices, I am interested in what focal lengths they made of certain l enses during this period.
I would...
Who out there shoots portraits with their 8x10? What focal length lens do you r egularly use or like to use?
I currently have the option of purchasing a 480mm lens for my 8x10 camera, but a m...
Can someone please tell me how I would go about checking whether the groundglass and film plane of my camera(s) are on the same level? Do I need a special and expensive tool to measure this?
And...
Has anyone used the new Zone VI Ultralight 4 x 5 camera? If so, can you tell me what you think of it? Does the shedding of its weight by 2 lbs, from 6lbs to 4 lbs, in any way compromise the...
If you're shooting 4 x 5 handheld WITH FLASH, and you can hold the camera reasonably steady, I don't see what factor "camera shake" plays.
Mani,
You said that Gursky shoots his pictures on 4 x 5--are you sure? They look like they were shot on 8 x 10 or even 11 x 14, but maybe that's because of the relative lack of a loss of...
General purpose large-format lenses are often designed to yield optimal results when photograping subjects at medium-to-far distances, or within a focal range o f 1:10 to infinity, and sometimes as...
At the risk of resurrecting a well-trodden debate, I would like to open the floo r to anybody who has used both the Rodenstock Sironar S AND the Schneider Apo-Sy mmar IN THE SPECIFIC FOCAL LENTH OF...
Pardon my ignorance, but can somebody please tell me whether the Toyo 45AII has enough movements to be used to photograph (tall) buildings, bridges, and other a rchitectural works effectively...
I have always wondered this: if f/16 or f/22 is the sharpest aperature-setting on most large format lenses, why was "f/64" adopted by Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, and certain other photographers of...
Tuan Luong,
Thank you very much for your practical, concrete advice--you have led me to conclude that the Prontor Professional shutter would probably NOT be appropriate for my shooting needs,...
Doug, Thank you for your second reply, but I have already decided that I DO want the (Schneider Apo) Artar as a portrait lens, precisely because of its extra degree of sharpness: I WANT the...
Doug,
Are you saying that I SHOULD get this lens? That the lens is big or thick ANYWAY, and that the Prontor Professional 3 shutter is NOT going to be much bigger or more cumbersome than say...
Thank you, Paul. I would be using the lens mostly in the field--so I don't think this shutter is the right one for me.
One more thing: the shutter is a Prontor Professional 3
I should add that the lens in question is a late-vintage Schneider Apo-Artar (360mm), manufactured circa 1990--so the Prontor shutter on it is only about 10 years old.
Nick Rowan
I currently have the option to purchase a Schneider Artar lens with a Prontor sh utter. All my life I have used only Copal--and occasionally Compur--shutters. Can somebody please explain to me what...
Doug, I haven't shot any pictures with the 10.75" lens, the one with the all-purple coating, yet--but I have taken some with the 8.25" and they look pretty good. But since I haven't used the...
I recently purchased two Goerz Red Dot Artar lenses--8.25" and 10.75" in barrel, both manufactured approximately 1968 - 1973. The coating on the 10.75" (the sl ightly higher serial # of the two) is...
I recently purchased an 8.25" (210mm) Red Dot Artar lens in barrel (circa late 1 960's or early 1970's) and would like to mount a lens shade to the front of the lens. Unfortunately, the filter...
Has anyone shot with both Rodenstock N and S lenses and closely compared the two ? If so, can you see ANY difference in resolution or sharpness--or general qual ity--between the two lens lines? I...
Pete,
Are you saying that you can't see ANY difference between pictures taken with Fuji, Nikkor, Rodenstock, and Schneider lenses?
I don't see how the differences between these 4 lens...
Mark,
I have never really tried Tech Pan film extensively--I tried it once or twice awhile back and felt its exposure latitude was too narrow for the way I work, and perhaps too contrasty...
Glenn,
Yes, exactly: Fuji lenses are more "Germanic" than NikkorM lenses, in terms of their contrast and overall "look". At least that is what I felt after studying prints I made with the Fuji...
Glenn,
I forgot to mention, you wrote in your last post: "just equate things back to 35mm terms". You see it is something that simple that I have been having so much trouble with, and which...
Glenn,
Thank you--this time I understood every word!
I have considered telephoto-design lenses in the past, but decided against them, because some people told me that they do not produce ...
Mark,
I am working in 4 x 5 because I am making 8 feet x 10 feet (24x) fibre-base BW enlargements, and need the larger negative. I have tried 6x6, 6x7, and 6x9--and the negative is not big...
To all,
I truly appreciate all that everybody has written in on this most vexing of subjects (at least it is to me), but I think it will take me literaly several days for me to digest and...
