I have to disagree with you on this, photographs should be looked at alone without distraction, on their own merit. A simple frame a white mat and the photograph on the wall by itself is the way to...

interesting to read all the posts...for me its a very simple thing...you make photos for yourself...you make photos because you HAVE TO MAKE PHOTOS....you try to show photos (galleries/museums)...
Am off to Asia in a few days to do my hand held 4x5 work. Does anyone have examples of similiar work they could show all of us? Any portraits that were shot handheld with a 4x5 camera would be...
Dany like your print, seems to have more heart than many large format portraits onsite.

yes...there is even a scene involving sex with 2 model girls and he seems rather bored with that also. I think that the guys that do the fashion stuff daily do get bored with it, sort of a shallows...
Not sure its exactly SLEAZY but I agree with your point, many of the great photojournalists shot with 35-50 mm lens most of the time. The problem with longer lens as I see it is that it limits what...
Frank like the edge you give your stuff, so many portraits I see shot in large format tend to be a tad boring, not your work.

Very nice portrait, reminds me of some of Jock Sturges stuff, he also used a similar lens a 250mm f 6.7 for years (fujinon), with Tri-x in available light.

Nice work, from what I understand Avedon used a 360mm for most of his 8x10 stuff as well as trix developed ALOT in straight D-76.
I like your composition idea of cutting off part of the face....
Avedon's work is also featured in the movie Capote. Avedon shot the "In Cold Blood" killers in real life so they had a actor playing Avedon come in and photograph the actors playing the killers. I...
haha...sucks when you forget things, tonight I was going to make some new images with my 4x5 razzle and forgot the whole darn camera!
hard to see if it is overall sharp, but the tones and comp look nice. great first attempt. Now go out and shoot daily!! : )

Jiri, find an interesting bar/people and go there night after night, build trust and understanding then you can start making photographs(after they get to know you and you them). I would try a...

There is sort of a sureal beauty to the image, the look of the print and the expression work very well together.

[QUOTE=cyrus;347877]Would you agree that there is a greater tendency in LF photographers to be landscape photographers QUOTE]
Yes thats a definate truth. I kind of find the whole landscape thing...
I find that an enlargement of my 8x10 negs makes for more powerful images. There is something about portraiture when it is bigger (maybe because it seems more realistically sized, more like the real...
as for movies already made..my top photographer movies are, all have been inspirational in one way or another....#s 1 and 3 inspired me to go to South East Asia to make photographs.

fine art photography is simply a term some photographers use try to seperate their work from the mass of OTHER photographs out there. Giving a a grandiose name to something makes it seem more...

thanks Ed, thats sometihng to think about. I have never used the Tmax 400/Xtol 1:3 combo.
Ed you shot your Technika hand held? what kind of shutter f-stop comboes we talking about? The extra stop...
Not crazy at all, devoting yourself to your photography is a great thing. I will give you some advice that a very knowledgable and creative photographer gave to me awhile back.
1) choose one...
Hi just got my 4x5 Polaroid Razzle rangefinder conversion. Going to shoot it on the street at night with flash in July. The plan is to use tri-x 4x5 rated at 200 and a 283 Vivitar flash which will...

Ok I think I got it now, will stick with my 300mm for 8x10, sometimes this techno stuff gets in the way of making photos. Had a talk with Jock Sturges where he just broke it down for me. Use 1...
Think I am confused, have to read that again.
If Burrows being the Tech who broiled he D-day film is true, that a amazing tale, and if so he did pay Capa back!
I read that the Life editors who printed the few negs that survived noted in the...
Domenico...I look at the portrait and one word somes to mind "Joy" Very well done.
Thank you very much Domenico.
thanks very much, am a fan of Burrows.
Like this image very much, not the ordinary standard(boring) portraiture. Wish I had taken it! Want to do some outdoor natural light portraits like this, beautiful.
Reminds me of Mary Ellen Mark...
Ash well done then thats a difficult timeline, thats stuff the pros have to deal with. Karsh had 10 minutes or something like that to shoot the world famous Churchill tough guy(took his cigar)...
