And the story I recall went something like this. I think it was the late 1940's and Weston as going to have a show, IIRC in NYC, probably MOMA. He got a letter cautioning him about sending any nudes...

Oooooh, Technikardan S 45. Nice!
David
And for me he CLA'd a Supermatic, a dial-set Compur and more than one rim-set Compur.
David
I have sent shutters to Jim Holman at:https://ictcamera.com/about/
And most recently to Michael Zacks: https://zackscamerarepair.com
They are in, respectively, California and Rhode Island.

Yea, I had that 18 x 24 in the back of my mind as I was writing my post. Did it have a rangefinder? You could use the multi-focal view finder for the 4 x 5 / 9 x 12, easily converting to equivalent...
I think one could make the case that the 5 x 7 Technika with its rangefinder and kitted out with the multi-focal view finder and anatomical grip constitutes the ultimate hand held camera. Well I've...
I have an older information piece on the Symmar-S, a single sheet, date code 1/77. It also shows an angle of view of 70º at f/22 and an image circle of 491 mm. One thing is it gives the "Engraved"...
Thank you. I thought that was the American Southwest. I'm partial to subjects like this.
David
Like that bridge too. Where is it? And what is that structure over to the right?

Just for sake of completeness, in later years the No. 0, No. 1 and No. 3 (a late addition to the line) Compurs were labeled Compur 0, Compur 1 or Compur 3. Can't find it explicitly in my literature...
This sounds like a No. 1 (Synchro) Compur. The No. 1 had a top speed of 1/400 and was marked "Synchro Compur", having both M and X synchronization. The No. 2 rim-set Compur had only X...
Hartmut Thiele's Fabrikationsbuch Photooptik II Carl Zeiss Jena also shows 1938. More specifically this is one of a batch of 500, serial numbers 2,424,501 - 2,425,000. Production of this batch...
In addition to the examples of new lenses, shimmed and not, that I cited above, I did find a used 55 mm Apo-Grandagon to have a shim .012 inches (about 0.3 mm) thick (measured with dial calipers.) ....
My 1957 Linhof catalog shows the 105 mm f/3.5 Tessar for the 2 1/4 x3 1/4 Super Technika. There was also a 150 mm f/4.5 Tessar for the 4 x 5 Super Technika.

See post #5 by Bob Salomon in this thread: https://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?113237-Calibration-after-a-new-Copal-shutter
He indicates that shim/shims/absence thereof...
This was essentially the case with the Calumet C-1. I used my 110 mm Super-Symmar XL on mine. The lens was mounted on a Calumet 4 x 4 inch board; the C-1 adapter for these boards was itself recessed....
A circa 1955 photographic supply house catalog I have lists the 115 Ultragon, claimed to cover 5 x 7. Said to be in a Compound shutter. Price was $135.00. The 120 mm Angulon was $89.95, the 90 mm...
Brett Weston used a 19 inch Dagor on his 11 x 14. I've seen a photograph of him with that camera in which that detail was discernible. His was mounted in a No. 5 Compound; they also came in the No. 5...
Thank you very much!
David
Very interesting. The two designs are quite different. (Just looked at Cröll's paper cited above by Dan and Oren.)
David
The "Edition" series consisted of five focal lengths, 150, 210, 240, 300, and 360 mm. It is my understanding that Rodenstock made up 25 of each focal length for this offering. Linhof & Studio show...
This is way pre-internet. I recall 60+ years ago when I first got interested in photography I'd occasionally hear people assert with great authority that lenses made before World War II were not...
Very interesting, thank you. Per some of Kodak's literature, the Eastman Ektars which followed shortly in the early 1940's had anti-reflection coating on their inner surfaces, something that's not...
Wynn Bullock combined both, here using a Ries tripod with a Majestic head: https://www.flickr.com/photos/johnlegweak/4161509897
I first saw this photograph many years ago, pre-internet, in the...
Thank you very much for letting us know the final outcome.
Wonder if someone mis-spoke on the invoice.
David
And thank you for making me aware that Goerz modified other shutters in addition to the No. 1 Compur (and Copal) when mounting their lenses. I'm adding a note to this effect to the "All things Goerz"...
In post #7 here: https://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?174276-9-1-2-in-F-6-6-Goertz-Dagor-Acme-3-shutter-thread-diameter-and-adapters we can clearly see that it is a No. 3 Ilex...
Alan, I really owe you an apology. Reviewing this thread: https://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?174276-9-1-2-in-F-6-6-Goertz-Dagor-Acme-3-shutter-thread-diameter-and-adapters...
I hope all four got through the war OK.
David
Really nit-picking here. In this context the spelling is "gage" not "gauge".
Some day I'll try to track down why....
You are very fortunate to have known Morley Baer when he was four years...
Maybe considered a bit pricey but the Linhof three way leveling head 003663 is very nice. See: https://www.linhofstudio.com/products/Leveling-heads/Linhof_3_Way_Levelling_Head
At today's exchange...
According to Hartmut Thiele's Fabrikationsbuch Photooptik I Carl Zeiss Jena, this 206 mm f/6.3 App-Planar is one of a batch of 10, serial numbers 73,457 - 73,466. Production of this batch began 3...
You also could join the UK Large Format Photography forum and ask there: https://www.5x4.co.uk and ask there.
Nice looking example.

Maybe a bit redundant here but...
I have a Goerz Optical Co. leaflet on the Red Dot Artar, date code probably 1967. It shows the plate diagonals covered at infinity as well as various reductions; no...
SK Grimes has flanges for two sizes of Supermatic shutter: https://skgrimes.com/mounting-flanges-and-retaining-rings/
Scroll down; they are the last flags shown.
What you will need to measure is...
B&H always seems to have an extensive selection of lens caps. If your lens is the same size as my 210 mm Apo-Sironar S it'll take a 75 mm push-on on the front and 65 mm on the rear.
David
Thank you Tin Can and Greg, things are starting to look possible...
David
Procuring shim stock is easy enough. Cutting a neat circle with simple tools I think not so much.
David
Does this article tell you how to go about cutting the shims? Trying to envision a way to do a neat job in the absence of, say, a punch press and a resident tool and die maker to make the custom...
Here's the piece on Ilex shutters. I'm quite sure this was written by Steve Grimes. https://web.archive.org/web/20110820015229/http://www.skgrimes.com/library/used-obsolete-discontinued-shutters/ilex...
