What film are you talking about here?
OK, here's the answer: Several years ago the developer was changed slightly to reduce or eliminate the Sabatier effect in T-55 film.

Try dip and dunk the negs for a couple of minuits, the developwe will wash off, flowing warm water wash for acouple of minutis will clear the back coat. 5 hrs is way too long
where is the straight black line? IF its on the tab end, in the picture area of the print then the envelope was not pushed in all the way into the cap
Bill
The best way to clear T-55 negs, that i found is to dip the neg in the solution and take it out and let the solution run off one corner, 5 or 6 times and the neg will be clear. wash with warm water,...

Another alternative would be Polaroid 20x24 print film iso 80, same as T-59 and 559
The 545 film holder has one catch in the center of the holder, slightly, bend open the cap to engage the latch, probably your older holder is worn enough to miss the cap.
Hi Adrian,
You do not need to dismantle the film holder, use a wet paper towel and soap, then wipe dry. This method is what I use on all the holders in work

My guess replace it in 3 years, as the steel cap will wear the inside of the holser and might create minute micro channels for light leaks, and foreign matter in the film, due to plastic scraped off...
