There's no great logic behind scanner selection. If someone volunteers, I take them up on the offer. The last time the film was in Sydney (around 2005), a friend had an Imacon Photo lying around. The...
I've added three more scans to the scan-around page.
One is a Screen DT-S1045AI from Ernst Vegt of Coast Imaging Arts in Canada.
Two of these are alternative scans to the original Heidelberg...
Raúl Sá Dantas has provided an Epson V750 Pro scan for the scanner comparison page.
David Fokos or Michael Kenna?
Regarding the 848 scan, I wonder if that machine is a little out of calibration. There is a major difference in scan sharpness from the 949 (which Dave said was serviced very recently). Both scans...
Yes, the Cezanne colour was a bit odd. The file was not tagged with any colour profile information, so I left in un-colour-managed. Setting colour balance by clicking on the Sekonic lightmeter cover...
More scanners have been added to the comparison page. They are:
Cezanne
Imacon 949
Imacon 848
Creo Eversmart Supreme
Microtek ArtixScan M1
Thanks to Ted Harris, David Rogers, Leon...
I plan to process and post the scans this weeken. If someone has a V750 and wants to do a test scan, I'm looking for the next film destination now.
Michael, that price is as good as you will get here in Australia. That's why many of us FedEx boxes of film in from Badger or B&H.
You are welcome to ship to me in Sydney if you don't have a...
I've mostly avoided 90's Joni Mitchell, particularly after the 80's Joni Mitchell. (The 70's Joni would have been an impossible precedent to follow.) But those lyrics are a great reminder of just how...
BTW: the essential step to getting a good conversion (inversion) is getting a linear 16 bit scan. There are some hints to getting a linear scan for some scanners on this page, including any scanner...
There's been quite a bit of discussion in the past on this forum about NegPos, David Dunthorn's Photoshop plug-in for accurate handling of scanned colour negatives (and b&w).
David has now...
JW, there is no parade.
It's simply a collection of scans for comparison. Certainly they are the results of varying levels of scanner expertise, so the viewer's conclusions are subjective. But...
Keith, taking a closer look, I think your comments do apply to the iQsmart scan. This is probably a function of my sharpening, as it doesn't seem to be true of the unsharpened crops (hold your mouse...
I bought my troubled 80XL in July 2004.
Steve, there is an Imacon 949 on the itinerary, when the film makes it back here to Australia. The 949 is still limited to 2050 ppi for 4x5 though, a slight improvement over the 848's 2040 ppi.
I got my lens back yesterday, having posted it to Badger / Schneider on 10/May. Well, actually, I didn't get it back. I got a brand new lens.
Two more scanners have been added to the comparison page. They are:
Creo Eversmart Supreme
Creo iQsmart3
The scans were produced by Creo in Israel, and were oil-mounted with software...
That must be a record! Three concurrent NegPos posts.
Adrian, take a look at NegPos by David Dunthorn. It's a breakthrough PS plug-in for inverting neg scans. You will need to scan as a 16 bit positive -- the essential step is to get a true linear scan...
Looking better by the day. The only thing I can see is a stray right bracket after the poster's name. Thanks so far!
Thanks for all your hard work. Here's hoping time for some photography returns for you soon... :-)
I've also just noticed that the <author> is always the thread creator, not the poster.
Tom, RSS seems now to be advising per-message. Thanks.
A small nit: the <author> text is always preceded by 'example@example.com', for instance 'example@example.com (Kerry L. Thalmann)'. Can this...
Tom, thanks for all your hard work. A busy time for you, no doubt :-)
Tom, can the RSS engine support notification of new messages within existing threads, as it used to in the old site? Currently it seems to only advise of creation of new threads, like photo.net does.
Tim thanks. I should have just poked around the user profile stuff instead of searching the FAQ etc. That'll teach me to RTFM...
Tom, is there a way of turning off the pagination of threads? Or at least configuring the number of posts per page to a higher number?
Thanks.
My lens has now also developed this issue. I'm getting some colour banding that occurs only with this lens, and on close inspection, I found the haze. It extends a significant way on the inner...
I'll include any scanners that I can get access to. If someone has either, just let me know.
Two more scanners have been added to the comparison page. They are:
<ul>
<li>Microtek ArtixScan 1800f, thanks to Ted Harris.
<li>Canon CanoScan 9950f, thanks to Ed Richards who turned the slide...
Mark, I believe an i800 scan is becoming available to the scanner comparison page in the next few days. I'll post a message when it's available.
I used the Acratech while the B1 was being serviced last time. I really didn't like its tightening mechanism, and was caught out by a couple of unexpected sideways flops.
Those RRS ball heads have...
I've used an Arca Swiss B1 ball head for a few years of weekend shooting, much of the time near the ocean. The B1 has a recurring lock-up problem. (NOTE: this is unrelated to the well-known B1...
Anywhere from $5 - $8.
Paul, I assume you used the WA fresnel -- what was the groundglass viewing experience like with that lens? Did you use darkcloth or some type of bino viewer?
Thanks.
The 1800f is next on the list for the scanner comparison here:
http://largeformatphotography.info/scan-comparison/
The slide is currently in Norway. When it finishes there, it will return to...
Can we be sure that we are not dedicating our energies to an endeavour in which all of the possible creative options were exhausted within a short time after the invention of the endeavour? Within a...
Bernard, I agree with Steve that you can sometimes omit the CF on the SS80XL. I've never used it on my SS110XL and have not noticed any falloff. The SA58XL almost always needs the filter IMO,...
