Completely agree. Try driving one of those things through construction zones with temporary traffic barriers and striping. The car thinks it's smarter than the driver and is seemingly happy to steer...
Get 'em both, if you can. Both are worthy of having in your collection.
As others have noted, Lodima published an 18-volume series of portfolios that are reproductions of those made by Brett....
Completely agree with that last sentence. There's far too much to see there to be concerned with copying what countless others have done before.
An outstanding photograph.
Ken Lee posted a doozy in here a few years ago--hopefully he'll post it again. It was a bird bath covered in snow, with a tree or other vertical element in the upper right corner with a few thin...
Time to put some money away for that 3-volume collection...
Yes, he's alive and active. Try contacting him through one of his galleries, such as the Fraenkel:

I'm pretty sure he lives in New City, NY, but I don't have...
Perhaps Sherman and Friedlander aren't concerned with imposing a "POV" into their photographs...
And the introductory essay to Self-Portrait is well worth reading.
Ken, this is a wonderful photograph. Thanks for sharing. The composition is everything.
This would be well worth hearing.
I second this idea. I find that even when using 35mm handheld, the experience of having used large formats already has really disciplined me and taught me to use the frame effectively.
As a Stanford employee, I would think you'd have a greater annoyance with UCLA's fight song, since it's the same song you hear across the Bay.
AFSmithphoto: I like that first one a lot. Excellent work.
Hi, Laura. I commute to Salem for work 2-3 times a week. Bush Park was very nice yesterday afternoon. There is a lot of value in this forum, and you'll probably learn quite a bit.
Mike
Thanks for the input, everyone.
Simple question for anybody who knows: are there any restrictions on driving from Twentynine Palms to Amboy? The road connecting the two passes right by (and perhaps even through) a marine base,...
If inkjet output is as bad as its detractors claim, this shouldn't be a problem, should it?
I would hang that in my house. Nice work.
Lee Friedlander's first book of self-portraits. Or maybe the 2005 MoMA retrospective on him.
I'd hang that in my house.
When someone states categorically that a photographer's work is pure, unadulterated crap (and makes similar comments any time that photographer's name comes up), I think some of us should be allowed...
Avedon's portraits of convicts were the first thing I thought of when I saw these pictures. I liked those, as well.
Jorge, look again at what Atherton posted. Do you see Friedlander looking you right in the eyes?
Whoops. I may be talking about the wrong camera. I don't know anything about a TZ model.
Michael,
The Shen-Hao is a great way to get into large format photography. It's relatively inexpensive, offers lots of movements, and a reasonable bellows draw. I've read that it's heavier than...
David,
Thanks for the lead. I ordered a couple boxes and should have no problem using it in the next year.
Mike
Merg,
I very much enjoyed the article on you and your work in View Camera a couple months back. I'd like to see more of it.
Jeez, I haven't visited this here APUG site in awhile, and...oh, wait. Never mind.
Thanks for all the input given so far. I think I'll march ahead with my Readyloads, even though it will be a good hit to the wallet (relative to traditional sheets and holders).
Robert, no firm...
I'll be going to Hawaii for the first time in less than 3 weeks. I had originally planned on taking a medium format camera that I could conveniently pack in a backpack (the primary purpose of this...
Paul, thanks for the commentary on O'Sullivan. I knew his picture from "Looking at Photographs," along with Szarkowski's discussion of it in that book, but now I have a book of O'Sullivan's pictures...
That book is a gem. I thoroughly enjoy Szarkowski's writing. I hope he continues for a long time.
An entry from his Daybook, regarding an arranged photograph:
"Technically dissatisfied with what should have been my best photograph of 'los pajaritos,' I spent another several hours attempting to...
I'll add "Looking at Photographs," by John Szarkowski. Not only will you be treated to Szarkowski's writing (he is my favorite photographic writer of all I've encountered), you will get a very broad...
Hi Paul,
My question was more or less tongue-in-cheek. There was another thread on here about Portland recently, and it was pointed out that more and more people are moving here, etc., so I was...
What's the projected population increase of Portland if/when a conference is held here?
It's way off the beaten path, but I second this opinion. And be sure to grab a meal or two at the restaurant in Silver City (the only one there, I believe), if you go. Great location, great food,...
