I just wanted to mention that RSS feeds for the FS section would be really useful, even more than RSS feeds for the general forums. For general discussion, I find myself coming back to threads often...
Yep. After more than a year of use, I still love it. Works as advertised, no fuss, no surprises - a joy to use.
And I think there are certainly more than 5 Chamonix owners here.
Tick tock, tick tock. What are the odds that a guy who just signed up on the forum will proceed to slam this new camera with several incoherent 5 page rants?
PS: The Byron looks like a wonderful...
Thanks!
A DSLR can be a shutter speed tester.
Brilliant! Love the plane of focus.
Votes for Weegee and Raghu Rai (and maybe you can use the Magnum link for him)
That back shift mechanism is brilliant! Like an arca clamp. None of the Wistas, Tachiharas or Ikedas I've seen have that.
Peter, I have lipped plates, but I am interested in the longer rails for use as an improvised focusing rail for macro shots.
Is anyone using one of those 6" or so long arca style plates on a Chamonix? Does anyone make these rails with both a 3/8 and a 1/4 screw? I can only find ones with two 1/4-20 screws but the Chamonix...
A Bender 4x5 would be it for me if it weren't so darn cheap. But generally I dislike all monorails where the rail sticks in your throat.
Worst serious camera (assuming we are leaving out dollar...
Thanks, Erie. I'll take a look.I think Sanders uses a tele-rollei mostly, though and they both use strobes. I'm mostly thinking of available light candid stuff.
I am thinking of an effective way to shoot 4x5 portraits and wondering how well handheld press cameras with RFs work. I am looking for the conventional approach to portraits: head or bust shots, wide...
Oops, I overlooked the two questions on my post. Yes, the print has a bit more detail, but my print scanning skill aren't very good yet. And the paper was Canson Montval watercolor sized in gelatin....

I wrote to a moderator and it was taken care of quite promptly.
A few months ago, I described a way to test shutters with a DSLR. If you already own one, it's a very cheap and reasonably accurate method to try.
I have tried the photo-transistor testers and I...
I doubt lenses made for the Oly 4/3 system would focus at portrait distances with the plunger attached. The reason lenses made for Minolta do better is that their flange distance is about 43-44mm. So...
The 4/3 system has a film to flange distance of about 38.8mm. So any of those lenses, to focus on infinity would have to be 38.8mm from the film plane. But even then they would not cover 2x3 film. If...
Red will lighten red. For caucasian skin, which is light, this means reddish imperfections will blend in. Green, blue etc will darken reddish imperfections, making them stand out against light skin.
Just the opposite.
"Bellows on my Sinar are fully stretched out" is a bit vague for people who don't own a Sinar. That's why all the answers ask you to consider the actual lengths of te extension and your focal length....
Depends on the magnification. And the magnification you'll get from a certain extension/bellows depends on the lens. With a 75mm lens at 150mm extension you'd be at life size and need to correct for...
I have often wondered why people prefer this (just to myself, not saying that it won't work for you). Not only can this be tricky or impossible with certain subjects, putting the thing there and then...
Divide the extension by the focal length of the lens. Then square it. Can be done mentally. If you want, use the calculator on your cell phone. If your extension is 300mm and you are using a 150mm...
Yep, that's it.
Got mine. It's lovely. I did notice though that there is a rectangular area of splotchiness on the screen as if there were some moisture trapped between the fresnel and the GG. This roughly...
Hey ho! Has the October batch shipped? Anyone else get theirs?
This was my understanding as well.
Obviously we need to wait for actual reviews, but this seems like it might significantly affect the solidity of the camera.
I recently got a digital scale that reads .1 gms and came with a weight for about $15. But it only goes to 500gms.
The folding viewer looks great for composing, but I wonder if there is a way to use a focusing loupe with it. Anyone used it yet?
In case the point was not clear enough in my post, I only mentioned kitchen because Leonard and Christopher brought it up in their posts and I advised against it. But I also realize that for someone...
I wouldn't recommend sleeping up there at highway speeds. :D
Take basic precautions and you can do all of that in a bathroom or kitchen. I'd prefer a bathroom, unless you have a really organized kitchen where all foodstuff can be securely stored away. No need...
Blumine, that would have solved the problem, but for some reason I can't find a head with a solid 3/8 stud - only measly 1/4-20 on top of cork covered platforms. Neither the most stable nor the most...
Just curious, Frank, but for non-studio use, how do you get the camera on and off the tripod? Screwing it on tight every time seems a very tedious proposition.

Simple! It's all about Ansel's southern wopper and the higher view points of his gravel stage. :p
But now that I've put my dissertation aside and put some quality time into the OP, it seems like...
After a long time using ballheads, I was thinking of going back to a good quality pan/tilt head. But looking around it seems that all of the innovation in high quality lightweight heads over the last...
Hmm, some interesting stuff to add to the Netflix queue, but it seems there aren't too many movies about LF photography.
I can imagine a plot about a young pioneer chasing his epic dream - man's...
