I made a board out of hardwood plywood, drilled a hole and epoxied the lens in. I also shaved about 1/2" off the back of the barrel to get it to clear the shutter.

I've shot a lot with a Cinaphor on 4x5 and although the depth of field is extremely shallow and it's a bit wide for portraits, I do like the image it makes. I mounted mine to a Sinar board and use a...
Beautiful work!
I came across a striking portrait of Angela on instagram and reached out to her via a mutual fried to see if I could make a portrait with her while I was in LA this month. She's going through chemo...
I've never used that head, I'm sure it would hold your camera but if it were me I'd go for something a bit beefier. You don't really need a fluid head for 4x5 landscape work.
Just my two cents.
you win the pun game.
I use a meter with collodion and strobe. Mine goes down to iso 3 but if I get a reading of f/11 I'll have enough light to shoot at around f/5.6 with some wiggle room for under/over developing in the...
Oh and the whole shebang for giggles.

Well it seems to hold the big bastard. Still have a couple of things to finish but it's definitely a huge improvement over my old head.

I've used carbon fiber strips for my 8x10 back. I used 1/2mm and layered it up like an old truck spring, epoxied the strips together. Works great, easy to work with and doesn't rust.
Have a few more bits to machine but the head is more or less together. It seems like it should provide a very stable base for the camera but we'll see how it holds up once I mount the big bastard....
That Linhof design does look pretty amazing, particularly the leveling function. Might have to try something like that as well. Thanks fellas.
Jim would you happen to have any links to that type of head? I think I know what you're talking about, hinge at the front with a shaft running vertically between two plates that gets clamped?
Thanks for the input.
Steve I'll probably put bigger knobs on it, these were just leftover from the camera build so will try them first.
David the camera is heavy but balanced on the head so...

Thanks Tracy,
There's at least an inch of clearance between the top plate and the center shaft which should be enough for the 3/8 bolt and a sizable locking nut. I had thought of leaving that...

I haven't found a head that I like yet, there's quite a few out there which would work but none had the combination of weight, cost and sturdiness that I was looking for. So, like the dumbass that my...
Thanks, most of it was water jet cut, pretty amazing what they can do now with those.
A young lady named Miracle made a portrait with me at my studio.

A 16x20 monorail I built earlier this year to shoot ambrotypes. In the process I learned some of the ways not to make a big camera. It works great but could definitely be improved on in V2. Weight is...

Steve's screens are definitely top notch, I have one for my 4x5 and it's super bright and I think the extra for the boro glass is probably worth it if you travel a lot with your camera, not so much...
Hi Kevin, I shoot 16x20 glass and would agree with the other chap who suggested starting with smaller formats. The cost of shooting big plates like that is considerably since you'll need a silver...
My point was that you could probably find a stroller for less than 40$.
I would definitely look at some kind of wheeled solution. I'm sure you could find a used stroller on craigslist and modify it's person carrier into a camera carrier.
I'd love to find that out, I have a couple of other older ones and the finish is really nice on them.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check out the aluminum blackening. I was also thinking about using asphaltum and an alcohol based ink I found that's supposed to stick to anything.
And Jim, I...
I have an old Goerz that I've disassembled and would like to repaint since the original stuff was 100 years old and looks like dog shit. I've tried several polyurethane and enamel paints with and...
Make your own, I just one for my 16x20 and it was remarkably easy and the screen is bright. Total cost was maybe 20$ for glass and grinding compound. And an hour or so of elbow grease.
I followed...
Whenever I don't have a ring for a big lens I just cut a lens board, make the hole pretty close and then use glue to hold the lens in. Works great, my one massive petzval has been epoxied in there...
Thanks Alan, I'll give him a call
We don't have a Leica dealer in Nashville.
I recently was introduced to these ball heads and was interested in them primarily because of their tilt lock function where a lever on the head locks the head into just turning on one plane. This...

Thank you for the answers. I am curious as to why the lens is marked F.28 which would appear to be the focal point but the actual tested focal length seems to be more like 40 inches. From what I...
So I just found this lens at an antique shop and can't find much information about it. The focal length is approximately 40", maybe a bit more.
Just wondering whether someone has any more info on...
Hi friends,
I'm currently working with a 500mm f/4.5 lens on a homemade 16x20 camera, and while that works great, it's a bit short and doesn't quite cover at infinity. I'd like to get something a...
what did you use to remove the old lacquer, I'm having trouble sanding in tight spots on my restore.
Also any advice on stripping the old shellac would be very helpful. Especially in the tight corners…
