I went through this calibration exercise with my VC enlarger (Zone VI), determining the contrast settings needed to match a print on grade 2 paper. I tested three VC papers, using Ilford Gallerie...
I haven't seen much written about this paper, so I thought folks might be interested in my experience with it.
I recently tested this against some other papers I had on hand, and this stuff is...
Don't forget the Zone VI
Ditto on the shutters...give it a few clicks before pulling the dark slide
Thanks Jerold for taking the time to share your findings.
I'm curious why you didn't include Seagull VC...
Same here Brian. I find it easier to establish a main exposure/grade, then burn from there with a different setting.
Yes you can still get graded paper lol, and I still actually use it with...
This method works for me, except for the use of the brightness control. I have a zone vi compensating enlarging timer. In my case, turning down the brightness at the enlarger control panel has no...
I no longer use the compensating function on my zone vi timers since I've had two of them go bad. I had them both repaired (by Calumet), but one went bad again. In both cases, the timers gradually...
Digitaltruth will ship glacial acetic acid.
Nice job Bill. Very clear.
As a former surveyor I can testify that these tripods will withstand a lot of hard use. You can literally jump up and down on the feet to sink it in the ground.
There...
I put a Panasonic Whispertone in my darkroom and run it constantly. It's very quiet.
For air supply I added a duct to the heat exchanger/house ventilation system, so I get a constant supply of...
Maybe going digital is your best bet on this one.
I would approach this by setting the unit to a gentle, constant agitation, and leave it there. Then run your developing time tests. Make sure your temp is constant.
Get a bunch of alligator clips from Radio Shack, string them on a plastic coated wire, and attach to the walls over your sink. When you're done, close the darkroom door. They'll be dry in the morning.
Heroique:
I believe you are correct that the source of the scratches is probably from catching the corners of the sheets above while pulling out the bottom sheet. When I tray process, I lift the...
Oops sorry folks I was confused...I used D-23, not D-72 (inserts foot in mouth)
Are we talking about the same D-72? Mine is mixed from scratch according to the recipe in Anchell's cookbook. In it, the recommended starting time for asa 400 film is 10 minutes undiluted at 68F.
I read somewhere that some lenses can be converted by removing one of the elements. Wondering if I could do this with mine and if so how to go about it. I use both 4x5 and 8x10 with:
Nikkor M 450...
I just did a bunch of 8x10 Tri-X in D-72; straight, 9 minutes at 70F. Used constant agitation for the first minute and then for 15 seconds every 30 seconds. Got a good "N" zone viii density of 1.30,...
I've found that a presoak is necessary with btzs tubes, tmx/tmy in tmax rs. I was getting lines on the back of the film marking where the wet/dry line was. These lines showed up on the print in areas...
You could also try Talas in NYC...they're very good
Always use a lens shade. The Lee system works well. They also make lens caps so you can leave the adapter ring on the lens. Yes the adapters are expensive, but if you're patient you can find them...
Many folks use soft insulated coolers to carry 8x10 film holders. I have a zone vi bag for 8x10 which works well.
Anyone know where I can find one of these with a 42mm hole?
Wow I didn't realize this was such a loaded question.
I found a source for both 28% and glacial on the web with no hazmat charges - digitaltruth.
Thanks everybody
I'd like to try and make some F6 odorless acid hardening fixer. I can't get glacial acetic acid locally and don't want to pay hazmat shipping charges.
Is Kodak Indicator stop bath the same thing...
I've heard of others having this problem, but it doesn't happen to me for some reason. I have the same setup, and my base exposure is usually 15 seconds at f/22 for an 8x10, f/16 for an 11x14, and...
What settings are you using on the control box?
Is the 60 sec with a 35mm negative?
What are you using for a timer?
Thanks Richard now there's a good idea
Thanks for the responses.
I've found it necessary to completely drain my print washers after each use; otherwise I get a buildup of gunk on the bottom, this even though I filter the water. I only...
Anyone ever plumb one of these for countertop use?
This unit has a 3/4" drain hole with a stopper. I'd like to attach a tube with a clamp. The hole is not threaded and access to the hole from the...
My experience with TXP in HC-110 is that dilution B is too strong, when developing 6 sheets of 4x5 in a tray with 1L of solution.
Has anyone tried washing 16x20 prints in an 11x14 washer, bending the print over into two slots?
I have a zone vi 11x14 washer. A 16x20 will fit if I curl it over. However I'm worried about...
I got sick of wasting time and paper hoping to hit the right combination of hard/soft/time and decided to calibrate the sucker. I used Anchell's VC printing book as a guide.
I recently employed a...
As long as it's in decent shape you can't really go wrong with the D2; it's built like a tank, easy to maintain and parts are readily available. I think you'll be happy with the VC head too.
Another vote for tmax 400 for the 8x10. Developing in tmax rs in tubes is easy and works well for me.
This started several years ago...B&H stopped shipping stop bath and Calumet started adding hazmat shipping to the glacial acetic. Last I checked, Calumet still ships Kodak Indicator stop at normal...
Tyler - I think much depends on your location if you want to sell local. For example, here in Vermont, I'd probably be lucky to get a few hundred for it. In a big city you will do better of course.

Playa del Carmen is great with kids. Easy flight to Cancun then rent a car and drive down to Playa. Lots of good stuff to photograph. I've been going there for several years but have never tried...
