Did they have self-timers at this time, or was that a later invention? I'm thinking it would have been possible to have some kind of mechanical wind-up device using a spring, but maybe not.
For some additional information: You're right - it does not fold up and I hadn't thought about that significance until you mentioned it. Also, the glass on the back measure 8 1/2 inches square.
