Just a thought: If you decide to go to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon as well, you might want to make a loop through Utah and go to Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon and back over I70 to Denver. ...
I use white artists tape (easily removed paper tape) cut to the size of the white strip on the filmholder. I fold over the end to create a tab for easy removal. I mark all my information on that...
By the way, as you drive (I'm assuming you're driving) through California's Central Valley, you'll be driving through some of the most scenic areas around...the orchards, farms and fields. Most...
'BTW - there is nothing photogenic in L. A.' - only if you go through the city with your eyes closed. I guess the Getty Center, Disney Concert Hall, the Arboretum, the Huntington Library, Union...
You can also use a plastic show box and stuff it in the back of your changing bag...holds it up enough to let you change film and gives you one more storage box...
Am I the caboose? Huh?
:)
Would you believe that the water bills in L.A. will be dropping because we won't have to import as much water this year? We can spare quite a few gallons for your plants. I'm not sure about the...
You can get a reasonably good grip on both filters if you use household latex gloves...also good for opening jars.
You should switch to archival mat board instead of cardboard. I usually let my prints dry almost to completion on a clean surface (countertop, laundry area), then put the mostly dry prints between 2...
Hi Ellen -
Regarding a "rotating back", a lot of the monorails have a back that detaches, then you turn it which ever direction (portrait or landscape orientation) you want then reattach. Sinars...
You may want to check to see if the rear lens element of the lens will fit through the front standard of your camera. some of the 90mm lenses have huge rear elements (90mm SAXL f5.6, for example)...
Also, if you load your film in a changing bag or tent, be sure that the bag/tent is dust free as well. Turn it inside out and give it a good shake or vacuum if you trust your vacuum cleaner.
Another good one is Colortek on Jefferson Blvd. in Culver City. I've used both them and A&I...all are good.
If you're in L.A. around the 20th of Jan, you might want to check out Photo LA which is held at the Santa Monica Civic.
If you want really cheap, and small, and potentially useful, try getting a laundry cart with a cross bar...hand the material over the bar, and use the cart for laundry later.
;-)
Lumahai Beach on the North Shore of Kauai...classic tropical beach, kid friendly, palm trees almost to the water line...sigh...
Also, there is a free instructional CD that Polaroid makes available on it's website. It gives you the basics.

Don't rule out the Sinars. I have an F2 that I bought for a good price at Midwest Photo (mpex.com) and I love it. I shoot about the same proportion of outdoor/landscape, etc. that you do...
...the Devil's Postpile (basalt columns) in California. On the other hand, there was an episode of "Long Way Around" on Bravo TV with Ewan McGregor where he and his buddy (on a motorcycle trip...
All,
Thanks for the input. I had suspected that the 90 SAXL would be problematic, but it's such a beautiful lens with the monorail. However CXC posed another good possibility which is to get a...
I have a monorail 4x5 and am now researching field cameras and compatibility with my two lenses (150mm Rodenstock, and 90mm SAXL F5.6). I am getting very confused. In most of the discussion...
Wouldn't some of this be dependent upon which lenses you have? Some of the field cameras don't seem to be able to handle lenses with large rear elements like a Schneider 90mm SA XL. It's my...
Cal Arts in LA and the Art Center in pasadena...
I have two of these and use them regularly. There are a couple of drawbacks. One is that they are heavier than the quickload/holder. The second is that there is a small disk shape "counter" on...
Hi Jack -
One thing to consider with field cameras is the size of the back element of your lense should you decide to go wider than 110. Some of them cannot handle the large rear element.
Alec - great idea! A piece of developed film! If you had a long enough piece and folded it in two, you could slide one side under the film and fold over the other side on top of the film you want...
Tim - I'm always learning new things on this forum. That's what I like! Never heard of a "Mido", so I guess I'll start researching. I'm just afraid that I'll end up buying more "stuff". On the...
...just as long as they don't discontinue the loose sheet boxes of Tri X. Not everyone wants to spend the extra $$$ for readyloads. Wouldn't it be nice if Kodak could make a system where they...
All - wonderful insight and good questions. It just seemed that most people had field cameras so I was wondering if they learned on field or monorail cameras. I love monorail right now, but the...
First off, this website is wonderfully insightful and informative AND the participants are all so helpful...kudos.
I recently started in LF using a view camera (monorail) and am in love with it. ...
You might want to look at a Donegan Optivisor...they have varying magnifications and the loupe is in the form of a window in a drop down visor...which is very handy. I use one help me spot prints.
Belmont Park & Sea World in San Diego?
If it is possible in your area to rent a lens, you should rent and test them out before purchasing. I wasn't sure if I wanted a 110 SS or 90 mm SAXL so I rented them and tried them out. Considering...
I had posted a note earlier about a product that wine lovers use to preserve open bottles of wine and I thought it might work on photo chemicals. I found the product and it's called "Private...
I had a random thought (not unusual). A local wine shop sells a product in a spray can that dispenses an inert gas (argon, I believe) that they use in open bottles of wine. It prevents an open...
Good to hear that other women are using LF. I took a class and fell in love with the camera, bought one and, yes, I lug the darn thing around by myself. Ah, the things you do for love!!!
:-)
...it's amazing to think that someone 100 years ago took this little slice of life in the Central Valley, and now we're able to share in that experience. Thanks for allowing us to enjoy your find!!!
FWIW - I have an F2 and am using Grafmatics, Fidelity, Polaroid 545i and 550. Hope that helps.
