Thank you, Sal. Extremely helpful!
I'm thinking about getting a whole plate back for my 8x10 camera.
Are the modern crop of WP filmholders / backs - from Chamonix, Argentum, Ebony - compatible/interchangeable with each other as far...
I dreaded giving up readyloads because of dust problems, but once I committed to film holders, I managed to learn how to deal. They sure were nice for travelling, though, and I've still got a few...
I really like Foma 200. I haven't tried or tested the 100 or 400. I haven't noted the contrast problems that others have mentioned - probably because per BTZS type tests, I've ended up rating it at...
People will complain about some of the quirks of the Combi-Plan, but it's a great option once you get the hang of it. You can also do twelve sheets (back to back) at once and then tray-fix them in...
Steve -
I really enjoy the print version and I'd rather get it that way than on-line. I don't really care about 1st class.
BUT... What would be really valuable to me is if you had all of the...
I really wish Kodak would spin off their film business. I get the feeling like at this point it's nothing but a distraction for them. I think it's pretty likely that there's still good money that...
Great. Now I've got a worthless Readyload back to match my Polariod back. I:eek:
I know Kodak's gotta make a buck like everyone else, but sometimes I can't help but feel I've been whacked upside...
Not even close. Whole different animal.
A few things that help me...
I have step up rings on all my lenses, so I can just use one size filter.
Keep your lenses ready to go - preview lever and iris open.
Sometimes instead of a...
I'll be up there that week doing the Vestal seminar. Love to see your gear!
I've shot some TMY-2 and it seems to have the same look and feel as TMY. From what I've read, the improvements are incremental. Development times are (slightly) different. If you liked the...
I love Foma and shoot it a lot, but the reciprocity is about the worst I've ever seen. Since I usually need to stop down to 22 or 32, it's not really an option for me at night. I usually go with...
Thanks everyone for the quick responses. I love this place.
Unless something great shows up, I may just try to find a C-1 instead. Different animal, but within my price range.
So I've been looking at 8x10 2Ds and similar cameras on epay and elsewhere and none of them seem to have extension tailboards included. Did these cameras originally include an extension board? How...
I've been trying out the ARISTA edu ultra 200 (Foma 200) and I find it to be great. Tonally it's not too different from the FP4+ I'd been using as my primary 4x5 film and it's less than half the...
It's easy to overthink print developers IMHO. Currently I'm using P20 which is extremely consistent, fairly cheap, and convenient to mix.
I've found that the tents - as opposed to bags - make a huge difference vis a vis dust. I use the harrison tent, but there are other good ones.

I've added threads to my unthreaded lenses by glueing step-up adapter rings to the front of each with hot-melt glue. Very sturdy and easily reversible. I've standardized on 77mm filters. As others...
I find that filtration will often make a big difference in separation even when no blue is obvious. There's still a lot of blue in there, although it's sometimes difficult to judge exactly how...
I've got a jar of ferricyanide on the shelf, but I very rarely need it.
I have a few. That one's a 5.5" Dallmeyer, F4, very early, 1860 or 61ish - not in the later "Patent" configuration which reversed the last two elements. It doesn't cover 4x5 at infinity.
Here's the latest Peztval shot...

Yeah. I had some film from that batch. It's an ongoing problem.
Thanks for posting, Jim! Fantastic as always.
I don't think Plus-X has been available as sheet film for many years. TMX formulation changed circa 1999, I think.
Many folks have edge density trouble with this tank. If you want a daylight tank I second the HP Combi as a good choice. A little quirky, but very reliable. Search previous threads.
For a subtle warm tone I really like Arista EDU Ultra from Freestyle, which is some sort of re-branded Foma. It's also extremely inexpensive. I like the Ilford Warmtone as well, but the price is...
I shoot a lot with old lenses and I've found that even with good shading - which is not to be underestimated - I still have to push my development if I don't want to be printing in the 3.5 to 4...
My solution was to glue a step down ring to my packard shutter so I can screw it to the front of whatever lens I happen to be using. (I've standardized on 77mm filters, so all my lenses have a...
Thanks Gene & Scott for your reports.
I called Freestyle and they said they'd had this problem before, but not in a while. Happily, they promptly replaced the defective film.
I'm pretty sure the HP Combi-Plan can be reconfigured to do 3x4.
Ahh... sorry. It looks like this is a regular thing with Foma:

So I just bought a box of 100 4x5 sheets of Arista EDU Ultra 200 (foma) from freestyle. I was loading up some film holders to make tests, but the $&%# film is too big to fit in the holders (without...
I'm finally buying a CF tripod - Feisol probably - and I'm looking for a lighter weight 3-way head. The Manfrotto 3047 I have now works fine, but weighs 4.5 pounds.
I was toying with Getting a...
Those corrigated polycarbonate roofing panels work great too.
As Ole said, they're very easy to fix and quite reliable. Instead of being mostly mechanical, the timing is done by this strange little pneumatic cylinder at the top. It's got these gaskets and if...
Avoid the Yankee daylight tank. I don't know anyone who's gotten good results with it. The combi-plan is inexpensive and effective, but a little quirky to use. See many previous threads on this. ...
Much good advice here. Trad films and XTOL, D76, HC110 are all good choices for the aformentioned reasons. I'd just add that a year ago I switched to Clayton F76+ which is extremely reliable and...

You should really write a book! I've got the Vademecum and Kingslake and many others, but you're the best resource I know of!
