Some great cameras here. Question - for those of you handheld style cameras that aren't fixed focus, where do you find the focusing helical/mounts, or do you make your own?

Peter,
A few things I thought of looking at the prototype:
1. The diffusion plane/light source doesn't necessarily have to be where the negative sits. You can use any materials to get a good...
Clearly you should go 8x10 with it!
Just kidding, if it were me I would go MF as well, I think you'll have more successful images that way. But honestly why not try both? You just got your camera...
Peter,
What is the outer diameter of the back of the lens? Perhaps you could use something like this:
ebay item #250980129341
Try searching "slip-on lens clamp __mm" or "slip on lens adapter...
Ah blast must have missed it! Let me know how they work out!
That is a good idea Dave - doing that would surely help with stitching for frame patterns where each frame has one edge along the frame outside of the negative. For example taking 4 or 6 photos of...
Rick,
I agree the problem of the whole unit becoming too high is an issue, however I am going to stick with designing a vertical setup for now. I think for most normal use you will be using the DSLR...
Peter, if you have a chance post some pictures of the setup. I would love to see what you come up with. I am working on finishing some other projects right now, but plan on making my own prototype as...
Wow Peter! That is surprising. Perhaps there is some merit in this idea after all - thanks for the quick comparisons.
This is something I too have thought about, and may give it a try at some point. After seeing all the amazing macro work done with microscope objectives I would consider using some of those for the...
Why did the mushroom go to the party?
Because he is a fun guy! (Fungi!)
Sorry these made me think of that joke..
Very cool Tuco - and nice job on the video as well, it was fun to see all the steps. Thanks for sharing!
Very cool - I would love to see those in person. Thanks for sharing!
Mark,
What about explaining the value of the hybrid workflow? You could explain that students shooting MF/LF film and scanning can get file sizes equivalent or better than many DSLRS, which a...
Here's one I did with close to a full moon illuminating the landscape. I believe it was about an hour at f/11 or so. Ignore the spots in the sky - turned out to be a fingerprint or two on the...
Curious - how are you timing the shutter release? Will it be a fairly wide shot and done by hand? Seems like you could rig up a little infrared trip system if you want to try a tighter crop. But I...
HP5 is supposed to respond very well to higher speeds when processed as a slide using the dr5 process. I've always wanted to try it:

I have had this problem printing murals - nothing worse than the "guess and check" method. However, I bet you could find a cable of sorts to attach to your focus knob. Something like metal conduit...
Put everything in baggies. Film holders, lenses, even the whole camera/case in some of those big ziplocs. When the wind and/or dust storms pick up, that sand works its way into everything.
I think...
Vinny,
I agree PMK is working great and I will most likely continue to use it. I am just curious about the potential benefits of Rollo Pyro, and figure it wouldn't hurt to try it out.
Hi,
I've been using PMK Pyro for 2+ years now and my supply recently ran out. Since I use a Jobo processor for 4x5 and 8x10, I figured I would try Rollo Pyro this time around and have a few...
Thanks - those little figures are hard to work with, but at that scale the possibilities are endless!

Here are some recent images from a macro series I have been working on. I think of them as tiny still life scenes just because everything is so carefully planned and placed in each scene. I am really...
Wow! Nicely done! Love the photo showing the Hasselblad back - makes it look like a little toy!
How did you go about designing it? Did you use CAD software to draw it up?
I think scanning a negative and/or resolution target is fine - you can even use a sharp 35mm or medium format frame wet-mounted for tests. Although your not getting the full frame, for critical...
Steve,
What kind of tripod is that? I have been looking for something small like that, one that could hold a MF & LF camera.
I'll have to take some photos of my camera I just finished - made of...
If you do this, I might get a thinner sheet and contact-cement or screw it to the board. I can tell you from experience that sheets of steel are rarely perfectly flat, even the thicker stuff.
Latest from a little (pun intented) macro series I am working on:

Thanks - The shop is at the University of Colorado so I try to keep it very clean and orderly for students, etc. The two Oxy Acetylene carts are just for theatrical effect. I am using the stick...
Self portrait in the shop - this is the black & white version, which was shot on Delta 100 instead of Provia.

Great long exposure! This may be enough to renew my interest in building my own P&S camera for just such purposes!
I have the same setup except using a Wista SP. I found with high magnifications a 150mm lens will use a lot of bellows, but for the Horseman it should be ok.
I have used Repro-Clarons at high...
I can contribute - This is part of a series I am working on. The figure is less than 1/8" tall. I started them using MF, but have since moved to 4x5 using enlarging and process lenses. I've also...
Not sure if this counts - but here is a self portrait I took in the Metal Shop where I work.

Nevermind, I found this regarding the photo:
"In this image Sugar Shack we see McFarland combine a digital composite from several negatives. The photograph was taken at night during the maple...
Thoughts on how the "Sugar Shack" photo was made? I really like it. Maybe taken at just the right time of dusk - then burning in the trees etc to make it look more like night? Or do you think it was...
Thanks Jimi. I can't have too much coffee before doing those...

Ben - I've just been using the stock wet-mounting tray that comes with the Epson V750. It actually works great - I am impressed by the quality. Those last two aren't even sharpened. I may try getting...
