I also have one of those. It's quite sharp, and has room to spare for any movements you'd want to use on it at 4x5.
One question; how does one shade this lens? I normally use a Lee shade, but...

You don't say what kind of shooting you like to do. For general street photography, the Italian Market area (9th street north of Washington) is a rich time warp of food stalls and stands (and less...
I understand the term "chimping" to have originated with photojournalists and particularly sports photographers, in reference to looking at one's own photo on the little DSLR screen and saying "ooh,...
The high-resolution large format digital backs that take several minutes to capture an image are scanning backs. Ordinary DSLRs and MF digital backs (up to about 22MP these days) have an array of...
Thanks Klaus. I'm not bothered by the comments here, and I tried to make clear what the limitations of what I'm trying to do are. Mainly, though, it's disappointing that there aren't more concrete...
Yes, as I said, not at all unexpected. However, I have heard these things said over and over, almost as articles of faith, but have seen very few actual head-to-head examples that would help someone...
Well, as I've said I'm not interested in trying to show off lens performance under optimal conditions (and am not equipped to do that properly in any case), but rather to help me make more informed...
Frank,
I was pretty careful, but of course could have made some mistakes. However, this is consistent with what I've seen in the past with this lens at high magnification. It's possible that my...
I can't really see why there would be. The betterlight backs are said to do pretty well with extreme angles and don't do worse with chromatic aberration than film, since they have three color...
Here's another informal lens comparison at macro range, this time putting a 120mm/8 Super Angulon (Linhof select) against a Nikkor AM 120mm/5.6 macro lens.
See...
Ted,
It wasn't really my intention to compare two lenses to show off the performance of one under the ideal conditions for which it was optimized. Rather, I wanted to compare them for the kinds...
Yes, I understand that the Gerogon isn't designed as a macro lens per se. However, since I do a great deal of photography at about 1:1 (as this shot was) and have both a 240mm general purpose lens...
Just a small correction: for some reason I typed "APO-Symmar" in one place above. The subject line is correct; the lens I compared against the Gerogon 240mm/9 was a Symmar-S 240mm/5.6. Both shots...
As for those crossarms, I've got one, too, and it really isn't suitable for heavy cameras. Even my DSLR is a bit hefty for it, especially if you need a long exposure.
If you want to shoot vertically, nothing you do with a tripod will approach what you can do with a good copystand.
I'm not sure I understand what problem you're trying to solve; if your head can point the camera down, why not just rotate the tripod to get whatever orientation you want?
The RRS L-brackets allow...
We all know that general purpose lenses do not perform as well as purpose-designed macro lenses at macro reproduction ratios. I was curious how pronounced the difference is in practice, and so...
Do they? I may be mistaken, but I thought Fuji entered the market after the main Polaroid patents expired. Kodak, on the other hand, definitely produced instant film (based on an independently...
I don't understand enough about the various market segments for instant films to be able to make any kind of predictions here.
There's the consumer instant camera market. That seems to be...
Pomegranates, persimmons, all the same to me. I'm from the city.
Geary, I really like the look of that shot.
Here are three more persimmons, for whatever they're worth:

I've found it helpful to refer to my film as "X-ray" film at the checkpoint when I ask for hand inspection.
Also, when shipping, Fedex and UPS don''t...
If you're willing to pay that much for a used 90mm, you might consider that for not much more you can get a brand new (with warranty, etc) Nikkor 90/4.5. That's a much bigger and heavier lens, and...
Ha; I love the connection!
I, too, found that article incomprehensible, but I'm also in a mathematically pedantic line of work so perhaps that puts me at the same disadvantage. Aside from the non-standard (or incorrect)...
By the way, personally I found the single most surprisingly labor-saving tool for shooting still lifes and tabletops isn't fancy lighting or a fancy table, but a good camera stand. Camera stands,...
I'd suggest then that you start with a solid ordinary table against the wall and a few rolls of seamless paper in various colors that you can tape to the wall and the table to form a sweep. Work with...
What do you plan to shoot? Straight product illustrations? General still-life arrangements?
I find a seamless rear sweep to be extremely useful, and a front sweep occasionally useful. ...
Beautiful (and technically challenging) shot!

Not to go too far off topic here, but I shot a GX680 as my primary "serious" camera for years, and it remains one of my favorite camera systems for field use. They're definitely heavy but, being...
Hey, don't imply that I said something I didn't. You asked a question that suggested you were either unfamiliar with the concept of fair use or didn't see where fair use might apply to this work. I...
Absolutely. The ability to easily create unlimited identical copies obviously prevents creative artists from ever making a living and is a threat that must be stopped. For evidence, just look at how...
Re-reading the Times piece, I may be mistaken. On the other hand, it looks like some of them may have been reshot. Dunno.
Copyright rights are not absolute. It's not a right to prevent all copying under all circumstances. Once something is published, certain rights go to the public, whether the original...
Thanks Gene. So I guess I'll need to just drill a custom hole.
Best,

I recently picked up a 240/9 APO-Gerogon process / enlarger lens that I hope to use for macro work with my (4x5) Sinar. I don't need a shutter (I'll use it primarily with a betterlight back or with...
Well, type 55 is quite highly regarded and has a loyal following. Fine grain, beautiful tonality (to my eye), no darkroom required, and you get a free off-by-one-stop proof print with the negative....
Yes, that's right; it runs above the street near the Penn and Drexel campuses. It still exists and has at least one active track (I see freight trains on it from my office several times a day), but...
