I use a recent model Schneided Tele-xenar 360mm f/5.5 and it has made many beautiful images and is one of my most used lenses. It is somewhat lower in contrast and sharpness than my Nikor 150mm but...
Just make sure you use a standard to long focal length - wide angle will introduce distortion.
Since you are photographing flat field subject matter a process lens around 210 mm for 5x4 is perfect....
On the ground glass alignment - make sure the glass is in the right way around.
