By closely examining the edges of the GG and trying to avoid tunnel vision-----an 8x10 piece of mat board with a 4x5 opening cut out helps tremendously.
I get great results with the Combi-Plan tank. I can't imagine the difficulties of tray development, but if I was going to go that route, I think I would probably use a slosher tray.
What materials/equipment was required then to make a stunningly beautiful print versus today-------------
THEN:
large format camera with lens, film, developer, enlarger-with lens, paper, paper...
It has a slight curve to the left as far as I can see.................
I did this test successfully one time, performing it precisely as instructed in The Negative, no problems for me. Sorry you're having trouble with it.
But I never performed that method of...
It's as if you developed 8 sheets with essentially no exposure recorded at all, save #8 with maybe just a bit of exposure, IDK.
Been thinking about it all, I guess I am constantly astonished at how often it is that folks feel they have to re-define, re-invent, or tinker with (whatever it may be) the ZS in order for it to be a...
I realize that, no problem there-----I have a fundamental disagreement about folk's so called "versions" of the ZS that has become sort of a thorn digging at me when I hear it, but I've no time to go...
Not sure what your're talking about here, my sentiments go nowhere near these things.
I have my own developing times, but did not invent a version of my own to get them. I don't fool with CI...
Guess I'm guilty of being a purist :). Just my thought here, but...........there may be Minor White's version, there may be Lenny's version, there may be Doremus's version, etc...etc.....there may...
I would have to disagree that Zone II is featureless black, it is to have the "slightest suggestion of texture" or "some slight detail"--------that is, if your effective film speed is set so as to...
Pretty interesting pictures, though I kept wishing to see them in a fine art black and white kind of way.............
I don't scan anything but prints anymore, and I only use the computer to adjust sharpness, brightness, and contrast to bring the scanned image in line with the actual print, and I like looking at...
Same here, I'm amazed how time passes when in the darkroom. I usually tone in the same session, but am considering going straight to washing after the last print, picking up the toning activity the...
I had to go outside B&H to get the lens mount for my 150mm Componon-S----I think, but not sure, it was through Free Style.
Sounds like you are up and running, not sure myself what the differences are between the XL and XLG, but perhaps the manual will have some similarities. I bought my LPL new for $2,700 in...

Just be careful with those adjustment screws, there's springs involved on the other side, I believe, careful not to go too far. The manual that came with mine, is not very significant, I might be...
Thank you, I like your scanned 4x5 Flickr set, looks like some would make for very nice prints.
And thanks Sly.
Probably been seen already in the critique thread, but I wanted to get this final cropped image in the "Just Leaves" thread, details if interested are at my Flickr.

I have the 4550XLG that does have an alignment mechanism at the lens stage, but I don't know if the XL has a similar adjustment option, if it does then I would consider it a plus.

Thanks, glad you like it......
This photograph may be in this thread a while back as a negative scan, but I present it here as print scan, details, if interested, are at Flickr...........

As I was progressing through this thread, I was coming to this same point. I would have to tell the professor that I'll just photograph any dam thing I want for my eye, and you'll either like it or...
I love it to have a good negative to be working on, but when I'm done, I'm mentally exhausted, and a little hungry.
Good point on knowing what the intention is, I'm horrible at putting in words some kind of meaning or description of my visualization.
Vaughn, I'm finding a slight downgrade in shadow value going from PS Elements, to Flickr, to LFPF. I just went back to PSE, and increased brightness just a bit and it's this latest Flickr upload, I...
Well, I made the final print last night and cropped in the enlarger like I wish I had done on the negative in the field. I did no additional buring, but I did bump the contrast setting on my LPL...
I'll certainly have to consider some dodge/burn, but you've cropped a little too much on the right side.
Thanks
Gary,
Thanks for the input, but I don't think I can go that route on the right side cropping as it eliminates those small areas on that far right leaf that are higher on the gray scale, that adds a...
Thanks for your input.
I tend to agree with crop as well, will have to consider a re-printing. It certainly seems to isolate the primary center of attention as I originally intended.
Man, I...
Interesting that you prefer the original framing, it feels that I did not isolate the primary leaves well enough. I normally like to have some paper-base white or very close to it for balance. I...
I offer this for critique. While I am very pleased with the tonal quality of this print, it is as I visualized it, I've been increasingly displeased with the composition and am thinking of cropping...
Vaughn,
The subject matter and composition work well, the panoramic view supports the composition or vice versa and the juxtaposition of shadow and light is not troublesome to me at all, there's a...
I see it as an interplay between shapes, lines, and curves, pretty much an abstract, but that's just my opinion. I will always react more to the relationships and distribution between the tones in...
