Don Messec will be giving a workshop for using the direct to plate method of creating polymer photogravure plates, and how to print those plates in North Saanich (just above Victoria) on Vancouver...
Since you are using a changing bag; centre yourself and exude calm, as any hint of frustration will build up humidity in the bag and make things worse!
Hi David,
I've never seen a photogravure, let alone make one, but I have a question.
How is "open bite" avoided in dark areas without using an aquatint screen? Is it some sort of printer...
I saw specks in some of Ansel's skies, and felt redeemed.
I last visited Carmel some 30 years ago after spending a month camping & climbing at Joshua Tree. We were sitting in a parking lot beside our camperized Volkswagen van eating home made enchiladas...
Vaughn (of original APUG fame)...if we do drive down, it would be an honour to meet you!
We may be driving the whole way, or flying to California and renting a car...not sure just yet.
Too bad about some places not showing prints in their collections to regular schmucks like me. I...
Hi there,
We plan on taking a 3 week swing down the western US next fall on a quest to experience platinum/palladium prints and was wondering if anyone has some suggestions as to where to go.
...
Sure will, but I hope you're a patient man!!!
Hi Denny...good point about "a good print of a great image is better than a great print of a good image."
Years ago I read somewhere that Selectol Soft had a veiling effect on local contrast and...
Exactly what I picked up on, and why my instincts were humming. Here's a couple more links that hint at what may be possible;

Wait a minute...is this the same Peter Schrager from APUG that I corresponded with about 10 years ago?
(double post)
Good idea Peter, but doesn't fit my life right now.
What holidays I do get from work have to be booked a year in advance, so they're usually around our daughters events and summers on our boat...
On prodding from Bob & Denny I've been been searching for good gum over platinum examples. Found the work of David Eisenlord that looks very good, but me-thinks a tad heavy in colour for my images. ...
Ahh, now I see where you were going. You're right that digitally enlarged negatives have changed the game altogether, where lots of controls can be used to manage difficult areas or diminish/enhance...
Hi Denny, thanks for chiming in.
My understanding, which is limited, is that multi-layered printing (dry mounting the paper to an aluminum sheet so it remains dimensionally stable through several...
Guess the old brain isn't slipping so bad, yet...
From his article on zone system calibration: http://www.davidkachel.com/assets/calibrat.htm
Hi Bob & thanks for the tip.
Can't remember where I read (David Kachel?) about the value of "going too far" when printing photographs; a bit like when you manually focuses a camera you go past...
Thanks. Just trying to get a sense of the possibilities before my new darkroom is finished and testing starts in earnest.
Anybody have a link which gives examples of how print colour changes from full platinum to full palladium as different ratios are mixed?
Life threw me a sequence of curve balls about 8 years ago which resulted in an epic dry spell. This has been a good thing, because it allowed space & time to dig down into a troubling dissatisfaction...
That's pretty much all I found as well. Found one for sale...it says 26 1KS on the front panel but has 26 1KS 2NT on the information plate on the back of the unit. Thanks!
Good points.
As stated earlier I've never held a hand coated platinum or platinum toned kallitype print in my hand, so I've sent a request for paper samples to get a sense of weight/texture.
I...
Anybody know what the "2NT" designates?
From Sandy King on the matter;
http://sandykingphotography.com/resources/technical-writing/uv-light-sources-for-printing
Love that!
You both bring to mind another issue that may come into play, and that's the 'rough' surface of the paper itself, some with more texture than others. Where a fine black line crosses over a 'valley'...
When making platinum/palladium/kallitype prints the sensitizer gets absorbed into the paper fibers. Would extraneous light from a diffusion source 'sneak' into the paper fibers on either side of fine...
Just got back from a trip to Vancouver where I got to check out the Prograf 1000 and the P800. After looking at prints supplied by Canon and Epson, as well as prints made by staff and clients of the...
Thank you Sandy, Bob & koraks for chiming in on this one.
Dry air is one problem we don't face on BC's north coast!
Health and Life had me out of the photography game for a while. Another...
Thanks for the tip Bill, but 16x20 is about as big as I want to go.
Does anybody have a website link handy comparing enlarged digital negatives made from piezoelectric and thermal heads?
Hi Les,
Going north from here might be a great idea for photographing, but Epson technicians would be locally extinct.
Nope...don't want somebody else printing my stuff!!!!
The detail loving...
What would you do if you were in my shoes?
I want to make enlarged digital negatives from 4x5's for platinum toned Kallitypes.
I live 1000 Kilometres (2000km round trip) by road from an Epson...
You have just passed the first in a secret series of tests, that if you indeed manage to successfully negotiate, will result in your receiving 'local knowledge' of great photographic importance!...
Thanks, Jim.
Just be prepared for a distinct lack of services, transportation, and company :)

Hi Evan!
Todays tip...cut tennis balls in half then cut a hole in the middle to stuff onto the bottoms of your tripod legs. Put the concave side facing down. Now your tripod legs won't sink too...
