Looks like an entertaining transition from dune to beach that's fun to explore.

Here's another example – just up the shoreline from you:

    Michael,
Thanks!! The feedback is greatly and sincerely appreciated.

    Heroique,
Lovely image of a (Washington?) beach. And, interesting "philosophical/ecological" question.

I haven't been north of Astoria in years, and that was to photo in Hoh Rainforest, but I remember that Washington beaches are surprisingly different from Oregon beaches. The beach/dunes question is actually pretty straightforward on the Oregon Coast. At South Beach State Park and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and isolated spots up and down the coast, the dunes rise sharply above the high tideline. Historically, the dunes moved and shifted with the winds, but years and years ago the (then) Soil and Conservation Service stabilized the dunes with European beach grass. Jetties were built at the mouths of rivers. The ecological changes were profound, but that is a story for another day. Changed or not, the dunes areas are very beautiful. I can highly recommend a camera trip .

Yes, I think Oregon out-dunes Washington – I wish we had more dunes "rising sharply above the high tide line." In my favorite local places, it's more like a gradual ascent, though there are plenty of sandstone cliffs. Thanks to the rain forests, such as the Hoh, we do get a lot of gigantic tree trunks floating down the rivers, then crashing onto beach shores – that's a tiny version in my image above, and a compensation of sorts for the Washington LFer. ;^)
