I worked on a job last year where we had (4) bi-tube heads, each connected to (2) 2400 generators. That's 19,200 w/s of power running through those, maxed out. We were shooting it into a 20x20 silk, in-studio. Don't ask why, but photographer(out of town guy) asked for it, so we built it. Crazy looking setup, but that's not the craziest thing I've seen/done on a job...

Be aware though: Profoto offers both UV-coated and non-coated cover glass for their heads.
Also, if yo want the MOST power out of a head, make sure the dome glass ISN'T FROSTED, BUT CLEAR. Frosting takes out 1/2-2/3 of a stop in my experience vs clear glass. If you want the most power, you'll need clear glass covers for the heads.

If I want I'll just take off the glass dome just for the shoot, they can be used without them, they are just more susceptible to damage without them, a fashion photographer fried broke the dome on one of his heads, he's strictly location based no studio, and he's been using it for 2 years now without glass, it's just not worth the money to him I guess.

Anyway if I end up shooting wet plate work I'll want a dedicated 4800ws pack so, renting is like $100/day or more+ travel into NYC so more like $150/day so for $800 buying one really makes more sense...

    Thanks for the input though.

The glass domes are there to protect the model in case the flash tube breaks.

If you don't care about your models, by all means leave it off.
And make sure your liability insurance is paid up.

    Lol!

I've spoken to many photographers and no one who uses Profoto that I know has ever had a tube blow, heck, I've got a tube in one of my heads that was made in the 1970's.... It still works just fine.. Profoto, the cost difference and quality is noticeable...

I didn't claim it was a common occurrence. I was a warranty repair shop for studio
strobes some years ago, and I've never seen a blown flashtube.

However, given the amount of power being discharged it certainly is possible.

Explain your rationale to some pretty model with glass shards embedded in her face.

    Fair enough.

I am being light hearted I wasn't meaning to sound "mocking in tone".

Anyway what do I know I don't even own a LF camera yet (everything but...lens, holders, film... Just no body) I'm holding out for a cheap used TOYO 45A or 45AX

I know a set lighting tech that got glass from an exploding HMI lamp in a large portion of his arm. I know an HMI and a strobe are very different animals but it's not pretty.

Energy is energy, regardless of the technology involved.

Large amounts of it in a confined space can be dangerous.

I wonder if the glass would reach the models face before the end of the burst... That would make an awesome picture! Lol

I suppose sarcasm and my bad humor combined don't translate well through text.

Don't take life so seriously... It's a forum, and hypothetical situation, of course in real life I wouldn't want any models face to be damaged.
